Working with the owner, Penn National Gaming and other project partners including Turner Construction Company, the team was able to design, construct and open the $250 million facility ahead of other gam- ing developments that are scheduled to open in 2017 and 2018. JCJ Architecture has been working with the previous owners of Plainridge since 2009 in support of that group's efforts to open a casino at Plainridge Racecourse. In 2013, Penn National pur- chased Plainridge Racecourse condi- tioned on securing a gaming license from the Commonwealth. Following the pro- ject's approval at local referendum in 2013 and then award by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission of the single slot-machine parlor license in February of 2014, Penn National and the project team moved forward with all speed to meet the objective of opening in June of 2015. The expanded racing and gaming facility features 44,000 square feet of gaming with1,500 gaming positions, including slot machines and electronic table games, and live and simulcast horse racing. Other amenities include live music, upscale casual dining at Slack's Oyster House and Grill, the first-ever Doug Flutie Sports Bar and 1,000 spaces in the convenient brightly-lit parking garage. JCJ's design incorporates a num- ber of sustainable-design features, including a broad array of photovoltaic panels and the project is on-track to be LEED Gold certified. "I would like to officially welcome players to Massachusetts' first gaming facility," said Tim Wilmott, President and Chief Executive Officer of Penn National Gaming. "We're thrilled for our guests from throughout Massachusetts and beyond to experience Plainridge Park's unique style of premium gaming, dining and entertainment in a luxurious and modern atmosphere. Importantly, it has been an honor to be welcomed by Plainville and the surrounding communi- ties as we partnered with the Commonwealth in creating new jobs, returning revenue to the people of Massachusetts and creating a new eco- nomic engine right here where it is so needed." JCJ Architecture's President, Peter Stevens, attended opening day festivities and commented on the crowds. "We were pleased continue our work at the Plainridge site and to work with the pro- fessionals at Penn National. Today, it is especially gratifying to see a capacity crowd as well as a line out the door. The expectation is that they will exceed the goal of 10,000 visitors in the first 12 hours of operation." Plainridge Park Casino is now in full operation and open seven days a week, 24 hours a day. These tiny particles are used in water based ceramic coating manufactured by Ceracoat Industries, located in Zurich, Switzerland. These tiny particles bond tightly together and make an impervious barrier that prevents liquids, dust and dirt from penetrating the surface it is applied upon. It is manufactured and distributed primarily in Europe since 1988. There is a Ceracoat Ceramic Coating for almost every surface. With 100 customer prod- ucts and 250 industrial applications, there is no surface that can't be protected. The goal using Ceracoat Ceramic Coatings is to protect, not clean. When you have coated any surface with Ceracoat Ceramic Coating, there is less cleaning because liquids, dirt and dust particles will not adhere or penetrate as they have in the past. This means to clean you simply wipe or brush away anything on the surface. Ceracoat has been used to protect the stones in the Vatican since 2004. In the past, the stones of the church were cleaned three times a year due to pollu- tion in the environment. First Ceracoat Wonder Cleaner was used to clean, and then the stones were coated with Ceracoat Stone Care. Now water from rain or snow is prevented from adhering to the surface and entering cracks, and the stones do not need frequent cleaning, saving millions of dollars. L'Olive is one of the leading restau- rants in Basel, Switzerland, and like all restaurants, the white tablecloths have to be changed immediately if a guest accidentally spills wine, Coca Cola, coffee or any liquid on the tablecloth, and each soiled tablecloth would have to be dry-cleaned. As a solution, all the tablecloths were coated with Ceracoat Textile Care, and now if there are any acci- dents regarding liquids on the table- cloths, the waiter simply blots up the drops with an absorbent material (paper towel), and there is no stain and always looks like new. After lunch or dinner, the tablecloths are simply ironed and look like new. There is no need to clean them frequently and this extends the life of the tablecloths greatly. Now the tablecloths are changed once each week. The economy of time for the waiters and the money saved for the restaurant is huge. The Ljubljana Excelsior is the leading hotel in Ljubljana. Due to the many clients, the fur- niture and fixtures of the hotel had to be cleaned professionally twice each month and replaced each year. After the last professional clean- ing of the textile and leather furniture, they were coated with Ceracoat Leather Care and Ceracoat Textile Care Premium. Now the furniture does not need to be cleaned every two weeks and has not been replaced in five years. You can see from the examples above why it says don't clean it, coat it. ULTRASTAR, AK-CHIN LOOK TO BRUNSWICK FOR ONE-OF-A-KIND ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCE When the deal to build the UltraStar Multi-Tainment Center at Ak-Chin Circle was formally signed, there was one specific requirement from the chairman of the Ak-Chin Community Tribe – "wow" him. With 164,000 square feet of fun, catering to all age groups, he was definitely impressed. These days, casino resorts have become important activity generators for the communities they serve. In the case of UltraStar Multi-Tainment, located on the property of Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino in Maricopa, Ariz., the entertainment venue was built as a way to bring more service and fun to the area. UltraStar also comprises 12 movie theaters, laser tag, an arcade, dining and bars alongside 24 lanes of "Ten Pins Down Bowling." Adam Saks, Vice President of Operations for UltraStar Theaters and the complex general manager, finds bowling an essential piece in the enter- tainment puzzle. "It opens up opportu- nities," he said. "It's universal and entertains young kids, and even appeals to the 70-and-older crowd. There's camaraderie in it." Today, bowling has evolved into a year-round, multi-leisure activity com- bining sport, recreation and entertain- ment. For Saks, the advent of bowling as a casino addition became apparent while working in Las Vegas for a number of years. "People need a break from the casino, and bowling was an escape while keeping them on property." An emerging trend among existing casinos is the addition of bowling cen- ters to their entertainment repertoires. The presence of a bowling center in a casino resort equates to increased foot traffic and enhanced market appeal. As a leisure sport suitable for tots to grandparents, bowling attracts all age groups and many different skill sets, and produces entertainment in myriad ways. According to the 2013 Experian Simmons National Consumer Survey, more than 50 million adults ages 18 and over, and 17 million youths ages six to 17, bowled at least once a year – marking the sixth consecutive year of participatory growth. From kiddie par- ties to corporate functions to leagues, bowling and its high participation fig- ures are capable of boosting traffic in an entertainment paradise like casinos. UltraStar Multi-Tainment lever- ages bowling as an asset and an added value to the casino. Guests might orig- inally visit to enjoy one of its fine din- ing restaurants and stay to play a round of bowling. Ten Pins Down features high-end furnish- ings found in most boutique e s t a b l i s h m e n t s . By working with Brunswick to create a high-tech and modern bowling center, the atmos- phere is perfect for hosting any event imaginable. Saks said that with bowl- ing, there's not much to maintain. "When you build a quality center, you're investing in something with minimal overhead that will be a long- term asset." With the advent of new technology attracting new customers, bowling is experiencing a bit of a renaissance. Of course, all of this means the bowling business has become more competi- tive, so choosing the right partner is critical to a center's success.
