F o o d M a g i c D a i l y Tu e s d a y, J u l y 1 4 , 2 0 1 5 4 QUALITY ANALYSIS INSTRUMENTATION FROM AGTRON Many major food companies are finding that Agtron instrumentation is invaluable in controlling the quality and consistency of their products. These bench top units are accurate, repeatable and easy to use process analyzers. The development of food flavor and appearance is directly related to the degree of process, and as such, quantita- tive measurement becomes imperative in controlling both the absolute and cus- tomer perceived quality. The Agtron Abridged Spectrophotometers are designed specifically for high resolution analysis of the degree of roast, bake or fry, of fruit maturity and of color/appear- ance variations of a variety of food prod- ucts. Agtron instruments perform product analysis by using very specific wave- lengths of light to illuminate the sample surface and measure the reflected energy. The results of analysis are displayed as a single "Agtron" number. Many products require little or no sample preparation before being tested, making it easy for multiple users to achieve consistent results. A g t r o n has experi- ence with many types of food products. If, however, your prod- uct is unique, the company offers a Free Laboratory Testing Program. Its staff of application specialists will perform a comprehensive sample evaluation. Samples submitted will receive full spectral analysis to determine the color signature of the product and spectral activity as it relates to the desired index. We use this informa- tion to decide which Agtron measure- ment system and what specific wave- lengths (color mode) should be used. MANAGE PERISHABLES WITH INFRATAB'S FRESHTIME PLANNER Freshtime ® sensor tags provide real-time temperature, condition and business data about your perishable through RFID- EPC (electronic product code), NFC (near-field communication) or dual EPC- NFC technology. Freshtime Planner™ is Infratab's gateway to Freshtime. Freshtime Planner is a freshness- budgeting app for desktops, tablets and smartphones. It is the interface that allows you to customize Freshtime sen- sor tags to your business case. Planner shows you how much shelf life is being used along a perishable's journey and allows you to model, plan and chart busi- ness strategies. Its intuitive design and simple, modern interface make for easy programming. Planner's powerful analytics rely on the metrics of Freshtime Points™, which are based on the simple concept that the life of a perishable starts at 100 points and goes to zero. The numbers correlate to criteria set by the brand owner. Using Freshtime Points, a handler creates a baseline by telling Planner how long the perishable lasts using current practices. If that information is not avail- able, it can be devel- oped by m a k i n g educated guesses and testing those guess- es using Freshtime tags to validate the information. Planner asks you to name the business steps or business locations your perishable will pass through. The first step, for example, might be produc- tion or harvesting and the end step might be the consumer. You estimate the time spent at each business step and the tem- perature. Freshtime tags allow you to deter- mine the number of points used along the perishable's journey and calculate shelf Continued on Page 29 Continued on Page 29 AN INDEPENDENT PUBLICATION NOT AFFILIATED WITH IFT Lee M.
