H o s p i t a l i t y & D e s i g n S h o w D a i l y W e d n e s d a y, J u n e 1 7 , 2 0 1 5 8 MIURA STOOL BY KONSTANTIN GRCIC By James Kasschau, CEO & President, ICF Group The Miura stool by Konstantin Grcic embodies the technological and sustain- able goals of its Italian based manufac- turer, Plank. Compared to the Miura, most stools are an uncomfortable con- glomeration of components and materi- als. Miura relies on a singular solution: reinforced injection molded polypropy- lene that is lightweight, durable, extremely comfortable, stackable and inexpensive. And when the time comes, Miura is recyclable! Grcic's desire for organic shape and Plank's use of innovative injecting tech- nology has lead to the characteristic form of Miura. "A commission from Plank to design a mono-block bar stool in plastic was the perfect opportunity for me to reinvent my vocabulary of shapes. I was keen to move on from the hard edge to a much softer design. The Miura stool is strongly based on principles of construction. However, its shape was conceived by working in a much more sculptural manner," says Grcic. Despite its 2005 introduction, Miura has maintained a truly dynamic shape, of which construction and ergonomics are developed into a powerful and expressive harmony. Miura is available in black, white, pure orange, traffic red, wine red, light blue and yellow green. It may be used inside or outside. Since he established Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID) in 1991, the Munich-based designer has developed furniture, objects and light- ing for many leading companies in the design field. Grcic defines function in human terms, combining formal strict- ness with considerable mental acuity and humor. He is often defined as a minimalist, but Konstantin prefers to speak of simplicity. In recent years, Plank has researched technological design possibilities and sustainabili- ty matters with design- ers of inter- n a t i o n a l renown. As a conse- q u e n c e , Plank's products have received numerous awards and acknowledgments; for instance, the XXII Compasso d'Oro ADI Design Award for its Myto chair and the IF Product Design Award – Gold selec- tion for its Miura stool. These products now form part of the permanent collec- tions of some of the most important museums – e.g. the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the International Design Museum in Munich, and the Design Museum of London as well as the Art Institute of Chicago. ICF is proud to represent Plank and its products in North America. PREFERRED FINISHING INTRODUCES FIREWALL K-800 FOR CAL TB 133 By Kyle Bullock, President, Preferred Finishing, Inc. Twenty-two years after the implementa- tion of the first full-scale upholstered fur- niture flammability requirement for pub- lic seating, California TB 133, the indus- try is about to change again. The California Bureau of Home Furnishings changed its residential furniture flamma- bility requirement, CAL 117. The new standard is called CAL TB 117-2013. The focus of the regulatory change is to require that upholstered furniture man- ufacturers use polyurethane foams that do not contain halogenated flame retar- dants. Concerns about toxicity and bio accumulation of halogenated flame retar- dants in the environment have led to the changes. The new CAL 117-2013 stan- dard will use a cigarette as the ignition source, replacing the traditional small open flame source. The Consumer Product Safety Commission is also studying upholstered furniture fire safety. The CPSC is cur- rently considering a national upholstered furniture flammability regulation that may require both a smoldering (cigarette) ignition source and a small flame ignition source. Preferred Finishing cur- rently sup- plies more fire barrier for CAL TB 133 applica- tions than any other produc- er. The team of scientists at Preferred Finishing has been producing fire barrier interliners since 1991. In 2013, their research efforts lead to the development of Firewall K-800. K-800 is the only barrier tested to meet both a smoldering ignition source and an open flame ignition source. K-800 is rated by MBCD as "ok for use" in building "Cradle to Cradle" branded fur- niture. Firewall K-800 contains no items listed in California's Proposition 65. It's easy to work with, "green" and highly effective. For more information, visit booth #8-1120, go online to www.firewall barriers.com, call 864.839.9432 or email kbullock@preferredfinishing.com. HALE STILL GOING STRONG AFTER 100 YEARS How many companies can say that they have been thriving for 108 years? Hale Manufacturing is one of the few to claim that distinction. Finding its niche in wooden storage products and libraries, Hale is just getting started on its new trajectory. People will be pleasantly surprised by all that they have in store. Known for barrister bookcases at its beginning, inventors of the 84-inch high bookcase, Hale still uses the solid wood shelving that made it famous. The com- pany excels in the university and public library markets, as well as corporate and professional offices. Its wood craftspeo- ple can compete with anyone on custom solutions. Although storage needs have changed, value never goes out of style. Clients are often amazed that Hale can offer them such a high end wood solution for half of what others are charging. That's the philosophy that went into the creation of Hale³, pronounced Hale Cubed, a modular and cubed based storage series. Hale³ offers designers and dealers an endless ability to create storage and define space using colorful cubes as building blocks. Hale³ comes in all of Hale's classic wood finishes as well as nine new contemporary paint col- ors. "Libraries and offices have changed so much in the last several years," says Jim Benson, President of Hale Manufacturing. "We still offer the quality and quick turnaround that our customers expect of us, but now we also offer products that are completely in sync with the electrical needs, aesthetics and practicality that these environments need in 2015." About Hale Hale is a third generation eco-con- scious, FSC certified furniture manufacturer. The company was made famous with the introduction of sectional barrister bookcases. Since 1907, Hale has produced solid wood cabinetry and book- cases made by Central New York arti- sans. For more information, go to www.halesince1907.com. FABRICS TO INSPIRE, BRINGING FREEDOM TO EXPRESS Inspired by the re-imagined plaids of high fashion catwalk couture, global tex- tile innovator Camira is launching the Landscape Collection as a tailored approach to meet the changing demands of the future office. The Landscape Collection comprises three beautifully refined worsted wool patterns – Balance, Contact and Synergy – including two over-sized plaids with striking highlight color accents - and a perfectly harmonized plain mélange co- ordinate. Designed by Camira's Hayley Barrett, the Landscape Collection reflects the changing office landscape and the age of collaborative working where modular furniture systems are increasingly used to travel through and define open work- space environments to spark ideas and inspiration. Created under the 'Inspiration with Freedom' theme, the Landscape Collection heralds new textile design opportunities, giving designers ultimate freedom of expression through color, pattern and textile creativity. When discussing her latest work, Hayley commented, "Landscape was inspired by images from contemporary fashion houses and couture catwalks dis- playing cleverly tailored jackets using oversized plaids. Balance, Contact and Synergy can work in isolation or unison. They are able to be pieced and used together in much the same way as pieces cut for a garment." NeoCon also heralds the launch of Camira's new Mill Collection, compris- ing five recycled polyester ranges, and the introduction of four high perform- ance/ healthcare products named Ebb, Flow, Huckleberry and Fragment.
