E d Te c h S h o w D a i l y 3 3 T h u r s d a y, F e b r u a r y 5 , 2 0 1 5 obesity at alarming rates. Getting kids moving more without taking away from critical instruction and learning time is a challenge – one that Ergotron is now uniquely qualified to help schools solve. ESD: What new products will Ergotron be showcasing at TCEA? SV: One exciting product is Ergotron's LearnFit Adjustable Standing Desk for students. It just won the International Interior Design Association & EDspaces Innovation Award for student furniture, and is popping up in Spotlight class- rooms around the country. The desk allows students to sit and stand during their class time, giving teachers a new way to activate learning. The other prod- uct is our new universal charging cart. The debate continues about which plat- form is best – iPad versus Chromebooks versus Windows. With our new universal cart, you have a solution that will charge and secure your current and future tablets for years to come. ESD: What are Ergotron Showcase Classrooms? Is there one in Texas? SV: These are actual classrooms in U.S. schools that are using LearnFit desks. The school district, school, educators and students have all committed to embrac- ing the student sit-stand opportunity full- time. In Texas, the Career & Technical High School in the Pasadena School District has been in place for several months now. You can learn more about the schools at Spotlight.ergotron.com. Ergotron (Cont'd. from p. 1) ESD: Tell our readers a little more about what it means to create an "active class- room." SV: Kids are meant to move, and sitting is a learned behavior that they have learned through tradition. Both teachers and students have been tethered to their desks. Now, with Ergotron's LearnFit Adjustable Standing Desks, students can intuitively adjust the height of their own desk to meet their learning mood – stand- ing to stay more engaged, or moving their LearnFit around the room for small group breakouts and collaboration. LearnFit desks give students and teachers the opportunity to listen to their bodies and to introduce low-level physical activ- ity into the classroom. ESD: Is there a link between movement in the classroom and academic performance? SV: Yes. Studies show that introducing low-level physical activity into the class- room has a positive impact on student health, classroom engagement and aca- demic performance. To review the studies, visit the LearnFit page on Ergotron.com. In general, introducing standing through- out the school day increases blood circula- tion, keeps the heart rate higher, burns more calories and helps maintain muscle tone and insulin effectiveness. Not only does this create a healthy "learn style," but it also helps classroom performance. A key feature of the HUE Animation Studio software is onion-skinning, a transparent image of the last frame taken over the live camera feed. The onion- skinning feature is invaluable for creat- ing smooth animated sequences. The HUE HD Camera with Animation Studio comes with a 60-page book with ideas for creating movies and step-by-step instructions to help with the setup process. The camera's innovative and versa- tile design offers unlimited positioning options. The HUE HD Camera connects to a computer via a USB port. Users can either leave the HUE HD Camera in its base or connect the camera's flexible neck directly into the computer's USB port. The HUE HD Camera can also be used as a document camera. By connect- ing the HUE HD Camera to a computer HUE (Cont'd. from p. 1) and a projector, students' work, books, experiments and pictures can be shared with the whole classroom. With its weighted base and flexible neck, the HUE HD Camera can also be used to magnify very small items such as insects, circuit boards, etc. Other uses for the camera include taking still pictures, recording real-time videos and video chatting. ESD: When you say visibility and con- trol of BYOD devices what do you actu- ally mean? TE: It starts with identity. SafeConnect can automatically identi- fy what devices are connecting to the network and identify who the user is on that device. In a wireless environ- ment, this is essential to allowing only authorized users on and keeping unwanted users off. SafeConnect also can assign a role to the user based on who they are: student, teacher, librari- an, administrator, etc. The control por- tion of the solution involves checking these personal devices to make sure they meet the security policy of the district. A good example of this is to BYOD (Cont'd. from p. 4) make sure all devices have anti-virus software installed before gaining access to the network. ESD: Over the last few years it seems like every vendor is claiming to have a BYOD solution. What makes Impulse different? TE: Impulse has been providing a solu- tion to secure and manage personal devices on a network long before the term BYOD was even created. For over 10 years, the higher education market has used our solution to manage student's devices. In recent years, the K-12 market has really started to mirror colleges and universities with the wide use of person- al devices. For more information about securing BYOD programs, talk with Tim at the Impulse booth #2023, call 863.802.3738 or email tevans@impulse.com. Adaptive Learning™ technology that dynamically adapts in real time to create millions of learning paths tailored to each student's unique needs. ESD: What makes DreamBox Learning Math different than other digital math products? TH: Too often, math programs merely show students a video lecture and then practice (really, regurgitate) the skill they just watched someone else explain. That makes math a disengaging spectator sport that neither honors how students learn nor inspires students to discover the power of their own mathematical abili- ties. At DreamBox, we know that stu- dents are brilliant and have incredible ideas that must be activated and lever- aged in order for them to understand mathematics. Therefore we put students in the driver's seat of their learning in every lesson and empower them to think critically and independently using our transformative virtual manipulatives. DreamBox Learning Math manipulatives take full advantage of new technologies to help students make sense of concepts and actually do mathematics in ways that are more effective than is possible with pencil and paper or digitized worksheets. ESD: How does DreamBox Learning Math support English Language Learners? TH: All DreamBox Learning Math les- sons are available in both English and Spanish, and classroom teachers are able to control which language each student experiences. For Spanish lessons, our translations are created and recorded by people, not electronically generated and spoken. And to ensure the most linguisti- cally appropriate experience, we have native Spanish-speaking teachers involved in the translation process. In DreamBox Learning (Cont'd. from p. 1) addition, our lessons are highly visual, interactive and designed to be intuitive like many video games so that students can figure out what the task is, regardless of their language proficiency. ESD: How does DreamBox Learning Math complement the classroom curricu- lum? TH: There's simply not enough time, assessment data or energy for teachers to differentiate and personalize for every student every day – especially when students are working far above or below grade level. Therefore DreamBox Learning Math provides teachers not only with information about each student's current perform- ance, but also enables students to learn key concepts and move at their own pace while receiving the support they need in every lesson. Our lessons pro- vide useful audio feedback in Grades K-8, and both audio and text-based support in Grade 3 and up so that stu- dents can learn vocabulary and receive the differentiated and scaffolded sup- port they need while they're playing. Because teachers trust DreamBox's pedagogical approach, focus on con- ceptual understanding and intelligent adaptivity, they have more options available to them for how to make the best strategic use of precious class time. ESD: How can readers learn more about DreamBox Learning Math? TH: We invite everyone to stop by TCEA booth #2342 for a demo, or visit www.dreambox.com to learn more about how DreamBox Learning Math can sup- port math education strategy in class- rooms, buildings and districts.
