Technology Technology can also reduce floor care costs. Today, GPS tracking solutions like TASKI IntelliTrail enable real-time locating, monitoring and managing of machines. By providing visibility of assets, these systems can keep track of machine working time and negligent use, and notify facility managers when a machine leaves a predefined area, there- by protecting the facility's investments. Chemicals Regular cleaning with the right chemi- cals will create a shiny floor free of scratches, grime and spills that will not only impress guests, but enhance safety. In addition to improving overall appear- ance, using the appropriate chemicals also reduces the need for more expensive floor maintenance techniques, such as stripping or replacing floors. Diversey Care's StandOut™ Durable Floor Finish Floor Care Solutions ( Cont'd. from p. 1) is an innovative floor care system that delivers superior, consistent results while reducing chemical waste due to advanced shut-off technology. It also increases safety because there is no mixing required or chemical exposure risk due to closed-loop packaging. Expertise and Support Organizations can simplify their procure- ment process and better harmonize clean- ing programs by working with a provider that offers tools, chemicals, equipment and ongoing consulting and training. The ideal provider will be able to recommend solutions for a variety of facilities, devel- op innovations that improve sustainabili- ty, efficiency and safety, and support organizations through implementation of new innovations, ongoing use and analy- sis of cleaning results. With the proper machines, technolo- gy, chemicals and support, organizations can extend the life and performance of floors and reduce overall costs. Additionally, facility managers can increase safety, sustainability and appear- ance. For more information, go to www.diversey.com, visit booth #1501 or call 800-558-2332. Step 1: Perform an Equalization Charge The first is to routinely perform an equalization charge to the batteries about once every month. This reduces the possibility of electrolyte stratifica- tion, a condition that occurs when the acid in the electrolyte fails to mix com- pletely with the electrolyte and settles to the bottom of the battery cell. The method used to properly equalize bat- teries is as easy as using a high-quality battery charger that features an auto- matic equalizing mode, or has the capability to extend or restart the charging process as needed. Step 2: Properly Water Batteries and Consider a Single Point Watering System After charging, and especially after an equalization charge, the electrolyte in the battery cells can lose water. It's essential to fill each cell with distilled water to the point that the cell plates are covered prior to charging and that the electrolyte is still below the vent wells. Because it takes longer to pop open the cell covers on each and every battery, and fill with water, a single point watering kit can not only cut the watering time significantly, but also prevent over or under-filling. The cost of a watering kit will often pay for itself over time and many systems typ- ically last five years or more. US Battery ( Cont'd. from p. 1) Step 3: Measure the Battery's State-Of-Charge Ninety percent of the problems with floor cleaning equipment not having enough power or operating time are usually due to an undercharged battery. To find out if a battery may only need to be fully- charged instead of replaced, check the battery's state-of-charge (SOC) with a simple hydrometer. You can quickly determine if the battery is fully charged, and diagnose other problems, by compar- ing hydrometer specific gravity readings to the specifications found on the battery manufacturer's website. If you perform these three basic mainte- nance procedures, along with your other routine tasks, you will see a dramatic dif- ference in the overall service-life of the batteries in your cleaning equipment. After you begin to see some real savings, it will definitely change the way you think about battery maintenance proce- dures and the importance of taking the time to perform them. While it's obvious now that hand washing keeps us healthier, it also seems likely that it has some subtle psychologi- cal effects as well. Many religions, includ- ing Christianity, Islam, Shinto, Hinduism and Judaism speak of ritualistic washing of hands, creating a link between the phys- ical cleansing of the flesh and the spiritual cleansing of the soul. This is probably why Shakespeare's Lady Macbeth sleep- walks through the castle halls at night, compulsively rubbing her dry hands together in a washing motion, while cry- ing, "Out, damn spot! Out, I say!" after helping murder the king. Psychological studies have shown that if you think or feel you have done SCA Tork ( Cont'd. from p. 4) something bad, you often have an increased desire to wash your hands. So it makes sense that poor Lady Macbeth felt the need to cleanse herself each night as she roamed the castle corridors ago- nizing in her guilt. The simple act of washing one's hands can help you feel less guilty, more optimistic, less doubtful and even a bit morally superior – as "clean" people have been found to be more judgmental towards other people's bad behavior. In our attempts at self-improvement and subsequent trials to eat healthier and exercise more, while being kinder to oth- ers and to our planet, maybe we can also remember to wash our hands more fre- quently, too. EXCEL DRYER DISHES UP ENERGY AND COST SAVINGS An interview with William Gagnon, Vice President of Marketing, Excel Dryer, Inc. CN: Tell our readers about your compa- ny. What is your main line of business? WG: Excel Dryer is the manufacturer of the original, patented, high-speed, ener- gy-efficient XLERATOR ® hand dryer. XLERATOR revolutionized the hand drying industry with patented technology proven to dry hands three times faster, completely in 10 to 15 seconds, while using 80 percent less energy than con- ventional hand dryers. XLERATOR also offers a 95 percent cost savings versus paper towels, eliminating their mainte- nance and waste while creating a more hygienic restroom environment. CN: Are you introducing any new prod- ucts? WG: We are excited to announce the new XLERATOReco ® Hand Dryer. The XLERATOReco model uses new 'No Heat' technology that dries hands in 15 seconds using only 500 watts, making it one of the most energy efficient and envi- ronmentally-friendly hand dryers on the planet. XLERATOReco sets another new industry standard in energy efficiency and sustainability, and allows restaurants to use even less energy than ever before. With a maximum draw of 4.5 amps, mul- tiple XLERATOReco units can be installed on one 20 amp circuit, which significantly reduces the time and costs for installation.
