P ro d u c e S h o w D a i l y 2 9 Th u r s d a y, J u n e 1 2 , 2 0 1 4 VOLM INTRODUCES VEST: THE VOLM ENGINEERED SOLUTIONS TEAM Volm Companies has long been an industry leader in providing quality packaging and equipment solutions to the fresh produce industry. Now, they are applying all of that experience and expertise to a new endeavor with the cre- ation of the Volm Engineered Solutions Team (VEST). A new professional serv- ices team of engineers and designers, VEST brings years of experience, talent- ed vendor partners, honed interviewing skills and the latest in 3D modeling soft- ware to create custom modular solutions for the food handling industry. "We have always sought to offer our customers the very best packaging and equipment solutions, whether they were looking for differentiated packaging or industry leading technology like Volmpack weighers and baggers," said Scott Erickson, Vice President – Equipment. "With VEST, we're taking this service- and solution-oriented approach to a new level." The VEST approach looks at solu- tions from a different point of view. Ideally, the team is brought in at the very start of any new project (whether an entirely new facility or packing line addi- tion) in order to recommend, design, specify, install and commission a truly effective, profitable solution. "VEST is an inter-disciplinary team that works together to create not just a solution, but the right solution for your unique situation," said Joe McGowan, Vice President – Sales. "Typical packing facility design or new equipment integra- tion takes an incremental approach. VEST takes a far more effective Iterative Refinement Design approach that enables a smarter, more cost-effective design and implementation process." The benefits of this "big picture" VEST philosophy include reduced labor costs, improved operator safety, enhanced produce traceability and con- sumer safety, along with the benefits of increased throughput and streamlined productivity. "Many in the industry are facing multiple pressures – rising labor costs, healthcare reform expenses, along with an increased focus on food safety," said Daniel Mueller, Vice President – Business Development. "Our VEST crew can handle all of those issues, and more." Volm Companies Inc., headquar- tered in Antigo, Wis., has been provid- ing the produce industry with the latest generation packaging equipment and materials for over 60 years. Its efforts include staying in touch with trends and needs of the grower and fresh produce packer such as traceability, automation, productivity and sustainability. As a single source supplier, it offers com- plete expert packaging consulting serv- ices – from package design and graphic development to full line equipment integration. PERU: LEADING IN TASTY, HEALTHY DELIGHTS WITH AVOCADO AND ASPARAGUS The diversity of Peru's climate has con- tributed to the production of some of the finest avocados and asparagus in the world. It has also helped Peru become an important source of these and many other products demanded by health con- scious consumers. No matter the season, Peru has an abundant variety of fruits and vegetables ready to be eaten fresh, steamed, sautéed or served in a plethora of other ways. Peru is one of the largest exporters of avocados. In 2012, fifteen million tons were imported into the United States., representing an increase of 73 percent from the previous year. The Peruvian Hass avocado is available each year at the peak of its ripeness during the months of May to September. A bet- ter time could not be possible for U.S. consumers, because in the summer sea- son American families consume this tasty fruit the most. But the appeal of avocado is not only limited to the sum- mer months. In fact, avocado has become an essential part of today's reg- ular diet for many in the U.S. For a sum- mer treat, this tasty fruit can be eaten alone or added to creamy dips. For a winter delight, tortilla soup topped with fresh guacamole is almost guaranteed to please any foodie. At only one hundred calories, a three-ounce serving (about half of an avocado) is filled with nearly twenty vitamins and minerals and little to no cholesterol or sodium. Peru is also well known for being one of the top producers of asparagus in the world. Exports to the U.S. alone totaled 78 million tons in 2012. One of the key factors that makes Peruvian asparagus beneficial to the U.S. market is that the Peruvian offer is largely counter-seasonal to the U.S. crop. The year-round avail- ability thanks to fresh asparagus from Peru has allowed U.S. consumers in large geographic portions of the country to gain access to this product at times when sup- ply would otherwise simply not exist. Asparagus has also found its way into American dishes. In the summer, it can be added to salads, and in the winter, warm asparagus drizzled with olive oil or served with melted butter is a favorite among many. At only four calories per spear, it is one of the vegetables that pro- vides the smallest caloric intake, while serving up more than twenty vitamins and minerals and a few grams of protein in a one-cup serving. Peru's efficiency in production results in the plentiful supply of this product, which can be made easily avail- able to eager consumers around the world thanks to Peru's exporting experience. Additionally, with a growing number of recipes that use these products as key ingredients, consumers anywhere in the world with different tastes can surely be satisfied by the amazing avocado and the incredible asparagus. Love Beets – a delicious line of premi- um, all-natural, ready-to-eat beets – announced the launch of its first organic marinated baby beets, along with a brand new line of natural beet juices with no added sugar.
