Tuesday, June 25, 2013 Ed Tech Show Daily Faronics (Cont'd. from p. 1) power management. ESD: What is Faronics Deep Freeze? HM: Deep Freeze provides the ultimate workstation protection by preserving desired computer configurations. Each time the system is restarted, Deep Freeze restores the computer back to predetermined settings. In essence, we prevent "configuration drift" by removing any desktop changes, including any malware that may have activated during the last session. ESD: Who is your target audience? HM: While we have a strong presence in several verticals, 75 percent of our customers represent education interests. We built our business by solving problems for IT administrators who are overwhelmed, overburdened and underfunded. Numedeon (Cont'd. from p. 1) examples of the use of social networked Internet-based games for learning. Why were you interested in this technology such a long time ago? S: That is easy – humans have learned through play for thousands of years, usually in a social context. The founders of Whyville actually started designing social-based computer games in the mid 1980s, with a game we actually first installed in the lobby of the Los Angeles County Library in 1985 to motivate kids to read books about science. We knew that this approach would be successful when the head librarian called a month later asking us to take the computers out because the line of children waiting to play the game was blocking access to the Mathletics (Cont'd. from p. 1) uniquely powerful for repetition and targeted learning to ensure students are ready for the demands of the Common Core State Standards. Teachers love teaching with Mathletics because it does the heavy lifting in diagnosing what students need to do for the common core, followed by powerful adaptive practice. Students love learning with Mathletics because of the high engagement via realtime fluency challenges and the confidence that adaptive practice gives them. Mackin (Cont'd. from p. 4) ers and customers alike. More and more content is being transformed and made deliverable in digital form. Books, databases and other digital content are rapidly populating the evergrowing list of titles and offerings that Epson (Cont'd. from p. 4) store and present images via 1GB internal memory, SD card slot or USB flash drive port; split screen function – display images side-by-side, perfect for comparing before and after photos; camera flexibility – camera head rotates +/- 90 ESD: What differentiates this product from others on the market? HM: Our patented Deep Freeze technology resides underneath the operating system, starting up even before the Windows or Mac OS. We therefore ensure that our protection is unaffected by any security holes that may exist in the system, including malware. ESD: How does Deep Freeze compare to other products currently available? HM: There really are no comparable competitors. Microsoft used to provide a solution called SteadyState that provided a similar benefit but was only supported for Windows XP – we have since seen many customers upgrade to Windows 7 and 8. Furthermore, we are the only "reboot to restore" solution available for Macs. ESD: Education is seeing a large increase in 1-to-1 laptop programs. How card catalog. ESD: Wow, that was more than 25 years ago. It must be exciting to see the growing interest in games and learning now. S: Yes, of course, it has been a long time coming. However, what is really most exciting is to see Whyville reach 7.5 million users, including now thousands of teachers. It is also amazing how many excellent partners we have been able to work with through the years. ESD: Besides the great growth in interest in learning-based games and Whyville, what are you most excited about at the moment in Whyville? S: Oh, there are so many things – but Mathletics is a CCSS-aligned K-12 math practice, instructional videos, a dictionary and concept-search applications, interactive activities, problem solving, animated multiplication songs and a vast array of printable workbooks: all inclusive for a competitive price. Mathletics addresess the Common Core State Standards in various content forms including: Live Mathletics, which addresses fluency standards through practice aimed at improving speed and accuracy. The practice is organized into difficulty levels that correspond to fluency standards found in the Common Mackin provides. As a company, we know we are at the forefront of this epic revolution, and it is quite exhilarating; but more enlightening is the speed and sheer enthusiasm in which people are making the transition. Whether it's seminars that we attend, or those that we facili- degrees to capture many angles – record white board images, student faces, or the classroom wall As a leader in innovation and partnership, Epson also offers the Brighter Futures® program, a unique sales and support initiative available specifically for schools. Designed to help educators select can Deep Freeze play a role? HM: We are finding that many of our customers are using Deep Freeze on laptops to guarantee that settings remain unchanged. IT administrators require less control in these situations and can set up computers so the system drive is "Frozen" but the user profile is "Thawed." ESD: What are your plans for the future of Deep Freeze? HM: Our customers have expressed interest in how they can extend the benefits of Deep Freeze to their entire network so they can retain all of their data. We recently released Data Igloo 2.0, a free utility that allows you to easily redirect your profiles and folders to a "Thawed" drive. However, we want to incorporate this functionality into Deep Freeze itself while simplifying the user interface. ESD: Are you releasing any new features or products? two of our most exciting projects are a new collaboration to design a uniquely Whyville-based approach to mathematics learning and a new project to help our young users explore and understand their possible future careers. The first project is a collaboration funded by the National Science Foundation with the Education Development Center (EDC) and involves kids first in solving mathematics puzzles and then in building their own to challenge their fellow Whyvillians. Teachers piloting this program have found, as we expected, that the opportunity for kids to 'make their own' and then challenge their friends is highly motivating. The second project involves developing new ways to engage children in thinking about their future careers. That project is a collaboration with ACT, a Core State Standards. Also, Practice Activities aligned to domains within the Common Core State Standards address the content standards by providing adaptive practice. Questions in the activities are scaffolded and also offer step-by-step animated support for students. Mathletics also offers instructional eBooks that address concept mastery and embed abstract reasoning, use of appropriate tools, and perseverance as described in the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Research has proven Mathletics to increase student math scores. Mathletics tate, the talk, attention and focus are all on digital. And, over the course of the past several months, that attention has been trained on Mackin. With such experience and longevity in the education industry, and a track record of multiple successes and exemplary customer satisfaction, and implement the best products for their classrooms while making the most of their budgets, Brighter Futures offers special pricing, extended Epson limited warranty coverage for three years, dedicated education account managers, and toll-free technical support for all Epson projectors and associated accessories. 39 HM: We're announcing the launch of Deep Freeze 7.7 at ISTE. In addition to improving our product line's configuration management capabilities, Deep Freeze 7.7 also introduces the seamless integration of Faronics Anti-Virus from within the Enterprise Console. Our antivirus software is a comprehensive security package that includes firewall, email and web filtering measures while retaining definition updates across restarts. ESD: What can consumers expect on the Deep Freeze roadmap? HM: Deep Freeze has a very "cool" future ahead. We're working on creating a web console that will allow our customers to manage our products from their browser. We also want to simplify the process of choosing a solution to address customer needs.
