Broadcasters Show Daily Monday, April 8, 2019 4 Phantom Digital High-Speed Cameras from Vision Research An interview with Toni Lucatorto, Product Manager, Vision Research. BSD: Tell our readers about your compa- ny. TL: Vision Research designs and manu- factures the Phantom brand of digital high-speed cameras. In the TV and motion picture industry, our products are usually considered 'specialty cameras' and are used to capture visual effects in movies, commercials, wildlife and nature documentaries, super slow-motion replays for sports broadcast and much more. We are a business unit of AME- TEK, Inc., a leading global manufacturer of electronic devices used in every major industry worldwide. BSD: What makes Vision Research unique in the industry? TL: Because we develop cameras for different markets, our product offering is quite varied, with several lines of cameras and several models in each line. Our customers in scientific and industrial fields, such as those working on new materials devel- opment, auto- motive safety, defense and medical research, all have their unique needs, and ultimately there are aspects that cross over, so features that we add for one market often ends up adding value for everyone else. This makes Phantom cameras the most feature-rich and comprehensive line of high-speed cameras available today. Features nec- essary for scientific research add inter- esting possibilities for our products An Alternative to Shotgun Microphones Klover Products' 9-inch Klover MiK (KM-09) is a miniature parabolic collec- tor that works with a lavaliere micro- phone to capture audio from distances not possible with shotgun mics. The KM-09 actually outperforms shotgun microphones in several ways. First, the parabolic collector of the KM-09 provides mechanical amplifica- tion that shotgun microphones don't. It can capture a normal conversation from more than 25 feet away in a quiet envi- ronment. From 6 feet away, the KM-09 provides similar signal levels to a stan- dard microphone placed only 1 foot away from the source. In many cases, the long-range capa- bility of the KM-09 eliminates the need for a boom pole. The desired audio can often be captured with a KM-09 mic mounted directly to a video camera. If a boom pole is required, the pickup range will be several times greater than a shot- gun mic. The mounting feature of the KM-09 also allows it to be mounted on a light stand, or magic arm, providing flex- ible, discreet mounting options. Second, the 9-inch Klover MiK sig- nificantly outperforms shotgun micro- phones in its focus. While the sound com- ing from the front of the unit is amplified by the parabolic collector, the off-axis sounds are deflect- ed. This ensures that whatever audio source the KM-09 is pointed at will stand out from the ambient noise. Third, the design of the KM-09 works to shield the microphone from the wind, making it far less susceptible to wind noise than a shot- gun microphone. There's also an avail- able add-on, 'dead cat' wind screen, that further reduces the impact of wind. The easy to use Klover MiK can be fitted with almost any high-quality, omni-directional lapel microphone, Continued on Page 25 Continued on Page 25 AN INDEPENDENT PUBLICATION NOT AFFILIATED WITH NAB Kimberly Oser Publisher Jules Denton-Card Senior Associate Publisher Lorrie Baumann Editorial Director JoEllen Lowry • Jeanie Catron • Karrie Welborn Associate Editors Anthony Socci Associate Publisher Yasmine Brown Art Director Jonathan Schieffer Graphic Designer Caitlyn McGrath • Susan Stein Customer Service Managers Marcos Morhaim Senior Account Manager Adrian Chacon • Paul Harris Account Managers Tara Neal Director of Operations Jay Watson • Hannah Stefanovich • Margaret Oser Show Logistics & Distribution Enrico Cecchi European Sales Broadcasters Show Daily is published by Oser Communications Group ©2019 All rights reserved.
