An interview with Andy Frost, Vice President of Education Solutions, Scantron Corporation. ESD: Scantron has a new assessment solution launching in 2018? AF: We do, and we're really excited about it. It combines a new, mod- ern approach to assessment with adaptive and fixed-form assessments that have been used successfully for years. The new solution is also backed by reliabil- ity and validity research that we've developed over more than two decades. ESD: How is this new solution different? AF: What I find most unique about the new solution is the way that it meets the breadth of assessment needs that we hear from schools and districts. First, it has all the things you'd expect from a modern assessment system, including a wide variety of innovative A New Approach to Assessments By Bridget Duff, Director Vertical Sales Solutions, Education Given the constant acceleration of technology and its adoption across industries, today's modern student requires a tech-focused education and the skill set to be competitive as they enter the workforce. The classroom is evolving and will require broadband to power applications and virtual learning – providing access to content and enabling a more personalized experience for students. This was the thinking behind the Federal Communications Commission's decision to issue the 2014 E-Rate Modernization Order. But, despite the gains that K-12 admin- istrators have made in bringing high-speed broadband to their schools, nearly 6.5 mil- lion students still lack this critical access. Even those that do have access may not have the bandwidth levels necessary to keep up with ever-increasing requirements. In September 2016, the State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA) recognized the increasing pressure on 360-degree video is an impactful tool for storytelling, learning and making connections. When wearing a virtual reality headset, the viewer becomes fully immersed within a real-time environ- ment, gaining the ability to view their surroundings in their entirety. Currently, this technology is most prominently used in journalism and filmmaking, to show a fuller scope of experiences. Virtual reality's power rests in its inherently organic design; the medium uses the same spatial views we are accustomed to when viewing our world. This technology elevates learning and brings content to life. 360-degree video and vir- tual reality content allow educators an illustrious new tool to give context, build under- standing and entice students to engage with curricula. "Genius Plaza believes that technology has a pivotal role to play in democratizing education," says Ana Roca Castro, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Genius Plaza. Through this emerging medium, the company has created and curated 360-degree vir- tual reality experiences, which transport students to the work locations of inspiring In early 2007, the Deputy Commanding General, First U.S. Army – cov- ering U.S., Guam and Puerto Rico – C. Stewart Rodeheaver was tasked with a single essential endeavor – a better way to train hundreds of the young soldiers. To address the need, his team developed 3D, virtual, interactive and augmented reality training programs for the army, sim- plifying complex concepts for better learning outcomes. After years of experience in working on military projects, General Rodeheaver estab- lished Vizitech USA to engage, excite and "turn on" the creative capabilities of indi- viduals through interactive, virtual and augmented reality programs. Taking a modern-day approach to learning, the company builds virtual learning and training experiences for K-20 educational programs, commercial businesses, healthcare and governmental programs. By creating intricate processes and recreating them virtually for an interactive, safe learning environment, Vizitech solves the biggest conundrum of the social education tools outpacing the traditional ones.
