New Crystal Unit Solutions for IoT Applications Developed by Murata Murata Americas introduced several miniaturized, highly advanced crystal units developed specifically for the IoT market. The company used its propri- etary technology and volume produc- tion capability to design a product line that excels in quality and reliability, while also providing a cost-effective solution. The series features a compact package that allows for higher-density mounting and use in lower profile devices. Target applications include IoT, mobile devices, wireless communi- cation protocols, and medical and healthcare products. The ubiquity of wireless communi- cation-enabled devices has driven the growth of products equipped with advanced functionality. This has been accompanied by the demand to down- size mobile devices and wireless com- munication modules. Further, there is a need for products to be RoHS-compli- ant and to be able to accommodate lead- free solder mounting. These crystal units meet all of the aforementioned requirements. The line-up includes the XRCED series, the world's smallest packaged crystal unit measuring just 1.2 by 1.0 by 0.33 mm. The XRCGB-F- H achieves +/-10ppm ini- tial frequency tolerance to enable Bluetooth ® tech- nology and meets the requirements for RF applications in a compact size, a feature that existing product lines could not deliver. Finally, the XRCMD and XRCFD offer a range of operating frequencies, temperatures and tolerance ranges that design engineers require today to produce tomorrow's products. "Murata is unsurpassed when it comes to leveraging our proprietary tech- nologies to reach new levels in the con- sumer electronics market. Our commit- ment to innovation and meeting the needs of this industry will only further future advancements," said Jonathan Davis, Timing and New Products General Manager, Murata Americas. About Murata Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. is a worldwide leader in the design, manufacture and sale of ceramic-based passive electronic components and solutions, communica- tion modules and power supply modules. Murata is committed to the development of advanced electronic materials and leading edge, multi-functional, high-den- sity modules. The company has employ- ees and manufacturing facilities through- out the world. For more information, visit www .murata.com. Connected Vehicle Cameras Keep Risks Low and Profits High for Fleet Operators Real-time information from combined video-telematics technology is helping fleet managers and drivers transform data into unique insights to empower profes- sional driving today. This helps business- es get smarter about how they approach their fleet operations. Unconnected vehicle cameras, which rely on SD card recording, are playing a crucial role in minimizing insurance claims, with some fleet opera- tors already achieving claim cost reduc- tion savings of up to 50 percent. But, it is the growing use of video-telematics tech- nology that offers the most potential to vastly improve the efficiency and safety of fleets. Not only does the combination of in- vehicle camera systems and telematics have the potential to make a real differ- ence to driver behavior in the future (dri- ver training is the single largest element in any risk management crash reduction program), but being alerted and having access to immediate video footage of an incident along with supporting telematics data also unlocks the potential for rapid liability assessment and third-party inter- vention, which are also essential when reducing claims costs. It is this real-time information that is contributing to reduced insurance costs, while providing fleet operators with insight into driver behavior to support risk management and road safety strate- gies. These, in turn, contribute to fewer accidents, improvements to fuel econo- my and less wear and tear on the vehicle. The consensus among fleet and insurance professionals is that video telematics offers the biggest opportunity with its ability to pro- vide specific informa- tion about a driver's behavior, which is why connected in- vehicle telematics cameras seem to be increasingly coming into favor – quite possibly the beginning of a paradigm shift in fleet safety analy- sis and action. Of course, fleet operators are increasingly using data from telematics to deliver training to the individuals or driver groups that need it most. But when telematics is used in conjunction with other emerging technologies, such as in- vehicle cameras, its potential to improve drivers' behavior becomes even greater. Meanwhile, the latest developments in connected vehicle camera technology, such as the Smart Witness KP2 – an "all- in-one" connected camera, tracker, telematics and advanced driver-assis- tance systems (ADAS) device – promise to further empower pro- fessional driving, enabling fleets to plan, monitor, manage and assess their operations for even better decisions and results. On-board ADAS features, for example, allow an additional layer of intelligence and data that can be used to aid the driver and deliver vital infor- mation that can assist with driver train- ing. Fleets should use all the tools at their disposal to minimize accidents, gathering as much data as possible and then acting on it. Find out how you can help fleets easily use real-time information from combined video telematics technology to keep risks low and profits high while let- ting drivers experience the journey in a whole new way with SmartWitness.
