APPLE'S VOLUME PURCHASE PROGRAM (VPP) FOR EDUCATION The Volume Purchase Program (VPP) from Apple is a service designed to pro- vide cost savings for schools that pur- chase education apps and iBooks for their teachers and students to use on iPads or Mac computers in the digital classroom. VPP and the Casper Suite together sim- plify the process of purchasing software and deploying it to teachers and students. With VPP managed distribution and the Casper Suite, teachers and students get the software they need on all their devices. IT admins have a simple work- flow for distributing software, purchas- ing and software inventory is centralized and standardized and schools can easily retain purchased licenses and re-distrib- ute apps as students come and go. VPP and the Casper Suite can help schools save money and ensure that the best learning apps and iBooks are made available to students. How Does It Work? VPP is a service provided by Apple. Schools can enroll in the program with Apple and purchase app licenses for iPad, iPhone or Mac through the App Store. VPP app licens- es are added to the Casper Suite manage- ment console, where the IT administrator can assign them to the appropriate students. Inventory reporting is quick and easy, and app licenses can be reassigned as students learn and grow. What is Required? VPP is available for schools in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, New Zealand, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore. Enrollment in VPP is available through Apple's Deployment Programs Portal. For more details on the enroll- ment requirements, read the Volume Purchase Program Guide from Apple. Once enrolled in the VPP program with Apple, apps and iBooks can be purchased at VPP rates and tokens will be provided which are added to the Casper Suite to automate deployment and management licenses. The Casper Suite is built to integrate with VPP and provide the best Apple experience for IT administrators and the teachers and students they support. WHY I SELECTED CLASSLINK, TWICE By George Perreault, Chief Academic Officer, ClassLink As Director of Instructional Technology and Library Media at Orange County Public Schools in Florida, I led a team of technology and instruction enthusiasts always ready to explore new advances in technology, eager to find the best means for supporting teachers and students. That got us out of bed in the morning, and yes, often kept us up at night. Looking back, one of the best deci- sions we made was to select ClassLink, which we adopted in order to streamline access to all the apps, content and resources our educators and scholars used every day. There are a few reasons why our team selected ClassLink among a robust group of platforms, including sin- gle sign-on technologies. Here are a few: The end-user experience was breath- lessly easy. Nothing is so elegant as being able to intuitively know where you are and how to get where you're going. ClassLink gave our teachers and students that experience. The initial setup took less than two hours, and required a minimal amount of time with one of our engineers. Having endured numerous implementation night- mares with other vendors, a famous quote from Arthur C. Clark came to mind: "Any sufficiently advanced tech- nology is indistinguishable from magic." The ClassLink team listened to the voice of the customer. Stan, the company Chief Technology Officer, was not only technically brilliant; he grasped what the pain points were for our team, our dis- trict, our teachers and students. It was clear that he cared deeply, demonstrat- ing a shared sense of commitment to our success. Most problems were resolved in hours, not days. Selecting any product in a district the size of ours is always a risk. Many products that are successful in smaller districts crash and burn when subjected to a district with more than 200,000 users. On paper, ClassLink was the clear choice for our team. The scalability and responsiveness of the company has shown that they are the up to the task, and it's been reinforced each year as one of the best decisions we ever made. Upon retiring, I was approached by several companies, including ClassLink. If I was going to join any company, I needed to know that the technology was as strong on the inside as it was from my out- side view. I needed to see that they were solving real problems; there's no point in committing to a company unless we're solving problems. Spending time with them outside the confines of vendor-buyer relationship, I found all of these things in ClassLink. If I am to talk with school leaders about this product, I have to know that my reputation and integrity will remain intact, and that the company will perform as advertised. This is why I selected ClassLink. Again. That's my story. It's a new chapter, and one I'm very excited about. Who knows, maybe if you spend time with ClassLink, you'll see how they can become part of your school district's story. Just like I did. QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN CHOOSING A TABLET AND LAPTOP CART Thousands of applications are available for the education sector, many of them with embedded videos, making the devices still more dynamic and valuable as learning tools. E-learning devices are outstanding alternatives to expensive, heavy textbooks, which all too frequent- ly are either obsolete the moment they are published, or contain entire chapters that are not part of the curriculum. The "digital conversion" of schools will only grow. E-learning devices sup- port game- and project-based learning, create a collaborative environment, reduce costs and can improve the quality of teaching and learning. But in order to realize these benefits, the devices must be kept safe, secure and ready to go at a moment's notice. Committing to the right charging and storage solution for your school's tablets, laptops, netbooks, notebooks or e-readers is an important decision – one that can result in tens of thousands of dol- lars and hundreds of hours of cost sav- ings, depending on deployment size. That's why it's crucial to ask the right question when making buying deci- sions. Black Box, a charging and storage solution provider, has worked closely with thousands of IT administrators, teachers and principals. Based on Black Box's experience, the company recom- mends you ask these 12 questions when choosing a charging and storage solution for 1:1: Is the cart adaptable and flexible, now and in the future? Will your devices fit? Does the cart have good cable man- agement? Is the cart safe? Will the cart's size work for your application? Will the cart stand up to years of daily use? Does it look sturdy? Can the cart easily and safely be moved from place to place? Does the cart allow con- venient access to devices and power? Does the cart have a design that can dissipate heat from the stored devices? How will you provide power to the devices stored in the cart? Is the cart secure? Does the cost of the cart accurately reflect its quality and features? What is the warranty?
