In my opinion, research driven by today's educational institutions can change the world, and I am proud that Silicon Mechanics is supporting that kind of change. The cluster is being used on seven different projects, shared by 10 SLU aca- demic departments. SLU scientists and researchers will be at Silicon Mechanics' booth at SC13, and are looking forward to discussing both their results and how the cluster has furthered their research. Hardware for the grant program was donated by Kingston Technologies, AMD, NVIDIA, QLogic, Supermicro and Seagate, and manage- ment software was donat- ed by Bright Computing. The range of research being undertaken with the aid of the high-perform- ance cluster is extremely wide. Let's begin with the Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering Department, which will use the cluster for computational research on new para- chute concepts that may enhance the ability to accurately deliver cargo by air- drop, which is particularly important for missions that routinely airdrop critical relief supplies. The technical computing industry increasing- ly wants to apply the mathematical and computational principles of scientific computing to solve enormous and ever- growing problems. The demands of this new technical computing, which includes Big Data, requires ever more speed, scale and efficiency. At SGI, we are enabling the industry to reach unprecedented thresholds of speed and scale with an innovative cool- ing system that supplies cold water directly onto the compute blades, cou- pled with air circulating throughout the entire system. This is just one of the cool innovations that have helped us create the world's largest supercomputer, the SGI ICE X. In fact, according to a Top500.org list from June 2013, three of the 26 supercomputers in the world today capa- ble of a peak petaflop or greater per- formance are ICE X systems. The ICE product line design also delivers com- pelling ROI, including the best perform- ance/watt number for any fielded X86- based system in the top 500 technical computing platforms. By uniquely pro- viding four-topologies vs. a single topology (typically fat tree only), SGI enables industry-leading application performance per dollar. ICE X can also save time and costs during system expansion or phased installation with its ability to support "Live Integration."
