It also includes GEVO: BRINGING A NEW FUEL TO MARKET By Gary Bevers, Business Development Consultant, Gevo, Inc. Earlier this year, Gevo, Inc., a leading renewable chemicals and next genera- tion biofuels company, shipped initial volumes of renewable isobutanol pro- duced in 250,000 gallon commercial fermenters and processed at its Luverne, Minn. plant, the world's first commercial bio-based isobutanol pro- duction facility. Gevo's isobutanol provides solutions to many of the challenges associated with first generation biofuels. Compared to ethanol, isobutanol contains more energy per gallon, is less corrosive, has lower water solubility and can be blended into gasoline at higher rates. "Shipping from the Luverne plant is a major industry milestone, as it repre- sents the first commercial bio-based isobutanol delivery of any bio-industrial company," says Patrick Gruber Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of Gevo. Earlier, Gevo had retrofitted the Luverne facility to incorporate its proprietary yeast and Gevo Integrated Fermentation Technology ® system to produce bio- based isobutanol. T h r o u g h initial opera- tions at Luverne, Gevo has advanced its learning of large-scale production of renewable isobutanol and expects to continue to build monthly pro- duction volumes until it reaches full- capacity run rates in 2014. The speed of production ramp-up is enhanced by the retrofit approach Gevo is taking. Last year, Gevo entered into a strate- gic marketing alliance with Mansfield Oil Company to efficiently distribute isobutanol-based fuel into the petroleum market. The Gevo and Mansfield partner- ship pairs the nation's leading producer of bio-based isobutanol with Mansfield's Continued on Page 55 Continued on Page 57 Lee M.
