HDSD: Paul Brayton Designs has a strong reputation in the textile industry. What has created this desire to delve back into the furniture design and manufacturing industry? PB: In working with luxurious textiles and leathers I saw an opportunity in the contract furniture industry to create exciting furniture designs. The Brayton Mega Print (Cont'd. from p. 1) dramatic and it's fun. Best of all, it gives everyone entering the building the excitement of Rangers Baseball. Companies are turning nondescript walls into advertising for their products. Restaurants are making you feel like you are in France or at the beach. Stores are reinforcing their branding themes and 1 Resource (Cont'd. from p. 1) seating components. That was the premise behind 1ReSource – my customers wanted one resource for the parts for their office seating components – they didn't want to be dealing with multiple vendors like in the past HDSD: How do you meet the needs that your customers have expressed to you? GB: I have a warehouse in Toronto, where there are 400+ skids of office seating components at any given time. It's a mix of a number of parts for office seating – all kinds of parts – gas lifts, chair mechanisms, arms, seats, casters, chair bases etc. I also have a warehouse in California where I stock the same parts. Printed Art (Cont'd. from p. 1) HDSD: How should photography be produced to really stand out in a public place like a hotel or office building? KS: Most importantly, very large. The best use of photography is to create an impactful statement that has the audience pass it once and remember what they've seen. Also, I can't emphasize enough how important it is to use true archival quality images and match colors accurately. At PrintedArt, we use exclusively fully archival materials including pigment inks that guarantee the highest possible color confidence. Then, to show the image literally in the best light, we use smooth material, since any texture would create distortions. We found that the 19 adjustable, flexible and fireproof. The panel curvature is determined by moving the uprights closer or farther apart. HDSD: What was your first step in adding furniture manufacturing? PB: I purchased a new 55,000 square foot facility which includes office space, a manufacturing plant, showroom space and an employee wellness center. The facility is located on 10.5 acres in Archdale, N.C. with room for expansion. HDSD: To what do you contribute your company's success? PB: I have always attributed my successes to strong employees. My team focuses on service through strong customer support, experienced craftsmanship and a knowledgeable sales team. Together, we build a quality product that we are proud of. PB: I am excited about all of our new products. We are introducing a number of new items to our furniture line. All of this because the technology allows a designer to print what she wants on wallpaper, using a giant version of what is done with an everyday office inkjet printer. Because the process is completely digital, differences in wall sizes and configurations are easily accommodated. Printing different versions of artwork can also be done at reasonable cost. Again, because this is digital printing, there are minimal setup costs. Another huge advantage of the digital process is speed. Production of a custom wallpaper mural can take from a few days to a week, allowing more flexibility in construction schedules. To add to the designer's palette, there are many materials available for printing of custom wallpaper, including paper, fabric, non-PVC, and vinyl in numerous textures. For temporary installations there are materials with "sticky note" adhesive. Materials and printing processes with excellent environmental credentials are available. The California warehouse is a little smaller in terms of number of skids, but it's the same mix of components. The Toronto warehouse supplies Canada and eastern U.S., while the California warehouse supplies the west coast of the U.S. It's all just-in-time, so customers can call today, and it'll almost always be ready to pick up tomorrow. I also have a supporting office in Taiwan and China that I use as a base for dealing with Asian suppliers and they keep the supply chair going forward with consistent quality items. be at NeoCon this year, and I'm really looking forward to seeing those folks in my booths 2054 and 1054 on the seventh floor. you make it a little different to make it fit our chair?" The answer to that question is always yes. Once that happens, our team meets with the manufacturer's engineers and designers. We can make any part to the customers' exact specifications. That part would then become the customer's part only. We could keep it in stock so the customer can pull from warehouse stock as needed or the customer can buy in bulk directly from our overseas factory. HDSD: Who are your customers? GB: My customer base is small to medium size office furniture manufacturers. Many of the companies I deal with will best substrate for creating the optimal output is still paper – most other materials absorb some of the color, which means the image loses part of the contrast. We are always watching the so-called "direct-tosubstrate" printing technologies, but at this point they do not provide the quality we are used to from working with paper. HDSD: Why are you using acrylic as your preferred material? Why not glass? KS: Acrylic finishes are optically clear and will create less problems with light refraction than glass. Acrylic is durable so it will not shatter as easily as glass during transport or install. Most importantly though, with high-contrast images, acrylic creates the impression that the HDSD: What do you expect to be discussing with the visitors to your booths this year? GB: We're introducing a whole array of new products, including new arms, casters, chair bases custom aluminum parts and gas cylinders. I'll have those there at NeoCon for folks to look at. We'll provide samples for customers who need to check them out when they get back to the office. We also do a lot of custom programs. A company comes to me and says, "I know you have this part, but can photo is literally "jumping out" at the viewer. So for any prominent display, we tend to recommend acrylic finishes over any other material. HDSD: Can your customers use their own images or do you exclusively produce your own collection? KS: We can produce any image as long as the image resolution works for the intended size. We've had many customers who had existing images that we produced for them on our material. HDSD: What happens if I have a hard time finding a specific image? KS: This often happens when a design For more information, visit booth 8-7072 at NeoCon, go online to www.megaprint.com, call 800-590-7850 or email sales@megaprint.com. When the theme gets very specific, finding the right images can be a challenge. We offer a number of different options for how to find the best images: We work with designers to define a theme and send it as an "art locator request" to our member photographers; we also work with partner archives to help customers who have seen a certain image and need to locate it; and we have done custom photo shoots in cases where the theme definition was so narrow that we did not expect to find a matching image.
