4 Wednesday, June 26, 2013 Ed Tech Show Daily FARONICS DEEP FREEZE PROTECTS LAPTOPS A technological wave has overrun the education sector in recent years, with numerous initiatives taking shape in an attempt to raise student engagement and improve learning. One example is the growing popularity of 1:1 laptop programs, which give students access to powerful software they may not be able to use on their own. These initiatives have raised concerns among teachers and education IT professionals alike. Schools that have launched 1:1 laptop programs save money because they can buy eBook licenses instead of physical textbooks, and students are actually more engaged in the classroom. However, these programs can also create an IT management nightmare when each student has his or her own machine. What if configuration settings are changed? What if a group of machines becomes infected with a particularly nasty strain of malware? Individually addressing each of these issues would be time consuming and costly in such a large-scale computing environment. That is where Deep Freeze comes in. Stay cool with Deep Freeze Faronics Deep Freeze allows administrators to save specific configurations for each endpoint, which can all be managed CLASSROOM ASSISTANCE IS NEVER FAR WITH EXTRON INSTANT ALERT Extron Instant Alert allows educators to request assistance with just the push of a button, making it indispensable in many classroom situations. Many schools have experienced a disruption in the classroom: an injury, a spill of hazardous materials, or another similar event that required some type of third-party notification. To prepare for a situation like this, instructors need a way to quickly and discreetly signal for assistance. The Instant Alert feature on the Extron VoiceLift® Microphone is a costeffective solution that is easy to implement. Often, classrooms have few options available to teachers for quickly notifying the school's administration or campus authorities of an emergency. The fire alarm system is usually available in each room in the event of a fire, but what about other urgent situations? This gives students a little freedom to use the technology without burying education IT departments in support tickets. The configuration administrator allows IT to individually select which drives to protect. By default, all drives are set to frozen state, which means they will revert back to the admin's settings at reboot. If IT managers want to allow some settings and data to be saved, they can use the Deep Freeze configuration Continued on Page 45 tems may not always be accessible and can be expensive to implement. Fortunately, Extron technology provides a method for requesting assistance with components that may already be installed in your classroom. The Instant Alert capability of our VoiceLift Microphone can be used to notify school administration officials or campus authorities via e-mail and text message.
