Consumer Electronics Daily News 2 1 Thursday, January 10, 2019 Pairing Performance with Connectivity for People with Hearing Loss Cochlear, the global leader in implantable hearing solutions, is a first- time exhibitor at CES 2019 and is using the conference to showcase its latest technology, the Nucleus ® 7 Sound Processor – the world's first Made for iPhone cochlear implant sound processor. A cochlear implant is an electronic device that stimulates the hearing nerve and provides sound signals directly to the brain, which is entirely different to the way hearing aids work. To date, cochlear implants have changed the lives of hun- dreds of thousands of people around the world. With the Nucleus 7 Sound Processor, people with a Cochlear Nucleus Implant can stream sound directly from a compat- ible iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch directly to their sound processor. They are also able to control, monitor and customize their hearing on any compatible Apple ® or Android™ device. "The ability to control an implantable hearing solution through a smartphone is a remarkable achievement and Cochlear is proud to be able to offer this technology to our customers. Cochlear is the first and only in our industry to introduce a Made for iPhone cochlear implant sound processor, offer- ing direct streaming from a compatible Apple device," Patti Trautwein, an audi- ologist and Vice President of Marketing at Cochlear. The Nucleus 7 Sound Processor offers a range of first-of-its-kind features with the Nucleus Smart App. Using the Nucleus Smart App, users have the ability to monitor and control their hearing from the convenience of their smartphone. Unique to Cochlear and particularly useful for parents, the Find My Processor feature helps locate a lost sound processor by using Location Services to determine the last place the sound processor was con- nected to a paired smart- phone, whether it has been lost on the playground, in the house or in the car. "At Cochlear, we design devices that help liberate our customers from some of the limitations of severe to profound hearing loss. Talking on the phone has always been a challenge for people with a cochlear implant and we're excited to offer technology that allows our customers to connect with others like never before by directly streaming phone calls and FaceTime ® audio from a com- patible Apple device to the Nucleus 7 Sound Processor," explained Xerxes Battiwalla, Senior Manager of Technical Product Management at Cochlear. A recent addition to the Nucleus 7 Sound Processor and Nucleus Smart App is a first-of-its-kind control feature called ForwardFocus. This user-activated fea- ture allows the wearer to hear better in challenging listening environments, such as a busy restaurant. When switched on, ForwardFocus reduces distracting noise coming from behind a per- son so they can more easily enjoy face-to-face conver- sations. ForwardFocus is designed for users who want to manage and enhance their hearing in very noisy situations, where even people without hearing loss could struggle. For CES delegates, Cochlear is offering the opportunity to experience ForwardFocus through a vir- tual reality demo at its booth in the Health & Wellness Marketplace. "We know that people with disabling hearing loss can withdraw in social situa- tions when they find it difficult to hear and feel unable to participate. That is why Cochlear invests heavily in technol- ogy that helps people with hearing loss feel confident in situations that may be otherwise challenging," added Trautwein. Introducing 5G EOC, its latest techno- logical breakthrough that features rich content management systems, enter- prise streaming and a social-commerce engine and secured data services all in one place. The EOC (evolution of com- munication) represents the paradigm shift from telephone, broadband and cable companies of the '70s, '80s and '90s to the wireless service companies of present day. Remarkably, the com- mon thread between all these eras expound on the need to push for higher speeds and broader service options that push the balance and behavioral pat- terns of customers across the country. The role of yesterday's telephone com- pany was defined by speed and dis- tance. The idea was largely about con- necting people to people. Today's wire- less industry has pierced the notion of merely connecting people to people by enabling all things to communicate everywhere. Time and distance has appeared to shrink in our current use patterns, making available the ability to experience the web like we've never thought possible. The introduction of LTE has changed the state of the tele- com industry by erasing the borders that were once drawn and defined by GSM and CDMA bands. RP Digital believes that EOC will have as great an impact on the entire market as LTE has in recent years. The choice of staying with a carrier based on brand loyalty is now erased from consumer conscience. Brands are now sold across every carri- er platform – no longer do device mak- ers have to choose whether they will support GSM or CDMA when all carri- ers now operate on 4GLTE. No longer is a consumer forced to use a carrier because of area restrictions or limited choices. Today's consumers demand best value as defined by their experi- ence with a service provider. Having to choose between a broadband operator, wireless carrier, local telephone compa- ny and cable company should not be the choice of today's consumer. Answering the call to this market dilemma is RP Digital, offering all services once pro- vided by five different companies on one integrated serv- ice portal that is simple to use. It believes that sim- plicity and reliabili- ty over all secures market share in today's industry. The opportunity in wireless is better now than ever before due to a demanding consumer base that seeks telecom services as the utility it was meant to be. The role of RP Digital's 5G EOC Framework is to pro- vide a best-in-class standard for the integration of mobile, social, eCommerce and secured data hosting services for customers throughout the world. Voice, data, text and cable serv- ices are viewed as fashions of data within the EOC Framework and not treated as independent service offer- ings. RP Digital believes the roles of tomorrow's telecom will be to create user defined platforms that are robust and modular in scope. These platforms should be built to provide the user with seamless integration across multiple platforms. Emphasis should be placed more on the experience that affords the user the ability to toggle between social engagement and commerce.
