This month in both Gourmet News and Kitchenware News, you will read stories that are intended to help you position yourselves as your shoppers' reliable experts on how today's product manufacturers and retailers alike are responding to consumers' de- sires to use their shopping dollars as en- couragement to pursue objectives in addition to corporate profits. This idea that consumers will hold manufacturers accountable for their corporate behavior is no longer a series of knee-jerk re- sponses to the latest major environmen- tal disaster that makes the headlines. It has become mainstreamed as an expecta- tion that the companies that provide us with the necessities of daily life will be- have themselves ethically even when they think no one's looking – because someone's always looking. Distrustful consumers are increasingly abandoning legacy brands in favor of those in which they have confidence on this point, even though they aren't necessarily willing to pay a premium price to get it – they sim- ply expect those assurances as the price of their custom. Today's retailers need to be able to discuss these issues with their cus- tomers as they're making their purchas- ing decisions. The ability to do that is part of what makes you a trusted source of advice and inspiration – and you as that trusted source is exactly what can never be duplicated by an online re- tailer. Online retailers can offer infinite selection and convenience, but they're never going to persuade your cus- tomers that they share your shoppers' values and concerns. Only you can do that.
