Yes, they're certainly more dynamic than traditional whiteboards, but we're still stuck with many of the whiteboard's original problems. They're a step in the right direction, but not a leap. ESD: Can you name a few of those prob- lems? LW: Well to start, IFPs still require teachers to be at the front of the class, despite efforts to increase teacher mobil- ity in the modern classroom. For exam- ple, if a teacher wants to use their docu- ment camera to show something on the screen, they have to cram that document camera, a computer and all the accompa- nying cables and adapters onto a messy A/V cart that must be next to that IFP. Secondly, teachers still have to face their IFP when writing on it. But here's the thing: teachers don't think back- wards, so why should they have to teach backwards? And with this, teachers will still be blocking half the screen when they're operating the board. Viewing distance is also an issue, as large displays weren't designed to be viewed within arms-reach.
