Like most of you, I imagine, I've been reflecting recently on the meaning of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, and what it says about us that our children have now decided that they need to take matters into their own hands to demand change. I'm glad to see that they're capable and articulate and caring and powerful. Now that the children in this new generation are learning to use their voice to direct change, they're likely to start taking a look around them at all the other ways we've failed to live up to their expectations. We need to be ready with some answers for their concerns. Fortunately, many of us are already working hard on the problem of how we're going to make a better world for those young people to grow up in. One of the pleasures of this job is the opportunity to tell the stories of the many of us who are using their businesses as a tool for doing good in the world as well as to generate the profits that are the lifeblood that allows them to continue doing good. In times like these, when there is so much troubling news in the world, it's useful and consoling to be able to focus sometimes on the real good that's also happening. That's why in this month's issue of Gourmet News, you can read about Northern Wind, which is a Fair Trade-certified provider of scallops that's generating funds to help in New England's fishing communities, and in Kitchenware News, you can read about Le Souk Céramique, which is bringing Fair Trade to Tunisian pottery artisans. These stories reflect our ongoing commitment to celebrating the good we see in the world. We're glad that our readers are letting us know that you enjoy this kind of meaningful reporting, and we hope that we're also giving you some of the answers that you need, so that you have some answers for the kinds of questions that your customers are asking. We certainly don't have the answers for every problem in the world – I don't have a clue about what's really going to solve the problem of violence in our schools, for instance. But though thoughts and prayers aren't enough, I believe that it can only help to be thinking and talking about how we're going to make the world a better place for those kids and others like them to grow up in.
