NATURALLY HEALTHY www.gourmetnews.com n MARCH 2018 n GOURMET NEWS N H 4 4 Epic Source Foods Offers Goat Milk Products Epic Source Foods continues to find reasons to smile thanks to the explosive growth of its goat milk portfolio Funny Farm by Laloo's. The company introduced the portfolio at Expo West a year ago with mock bags and boxes in hopes people would give it a chance to prove it really does have a delicious taste profile, uniquely different from any other goat milk product in the world. The Funny Farm portfolio consists of the world's first Mac & Cheese, Cheddar Pop- corn and Frozen Pizza line made exclusively with goat milk. Now the portfolio contains over 20 SKUs that include hard and soft cheeses, butter and unique cheese spreads unlike anything else you can find in the U.S. Julia and Tim Millson, Owners of Epic Source, say they're having a ball with this portfolio. The amazing nutritional and sus- tainability benefits combined with the cow- like taste has catapulted it to one of the fastest growing "real-dairy" companies. It transitioned from a 15-year-old goat milk ice cream company called Laloo's to a full goat milk portfolio covering edge and center store opportunities. Its distribution now covers the country and far beyond, making it a chal- lenge as a self-funded company still seeking a partner. The company's passion to get its products into the hands of the hundreds of millions of consumers that can't or won't consume cow milk is what drives it. The delicious reputation of the Laloo's ice cream is what brought customer acceptance so quickly. Until Funny Farm, there were no other "real dairy" food options outside of cow milk. The company believes that goat milk is sustainably and nutritionally supe- rior. Goat milk is the closest thing to mother's milk on the planet, and contains less lactose, lower carbs, more vitamin A and D, potassium, copper, iron and manganese. Goat milk fat globules are 90 percent smaller than a cow's, providing that EZ-PZ di- gestibility edge. Cow milk contains Alpha s1 casein, the allergen that affects so many. The sustainability that goats provide are amazing; their tiny carbon hoofprint combined with the fact goats produce more milk per ounce of grass eaten than cows make them the per- fect dairy source. Most people never knew that goat milk represents 70 percent of all the world's milk. North America is finally catch- ing on to this worldwide trend, with goat milk consumption growing while cow milk continues to decline. Thanks to its clean taste profiles, people don't believe the com- pany's products are made from goat milk. Its milk doesn't contain those grassy, lemony flavors it refers to as "goaty." Better milk really does makes better cheese and ice cream! About The Epic Source Food Company LLC Epic Source Foods offices in Frisco Texas with production in Wisconsin. Rogue Creamery Wins Gold at World Cheese Awards Rogue Creamery's Rogue River Blue was awarded a Gold Medal at the 30th Annual World Cheese Awards in London, U.K. The World Cheese Awards is the largest and most respected competition of its type in the world. Two hundred and sixty judges gath- ered to taste and score more than 3,000 cheeses from 30 countries. "It is an honor to receive the news of Rogue River Blue's Gold Medal award. This is a win for Rogue River Blue and organic Oregon and American made cheese," said David Gremmels, Cheesemaker and Presi- dent. This was the fifth Gold Medal for Rogue River Blue at the World Cheese Awards Competition. It's hand wrapped in Syrah grape leaves, from local biodynamic, or- ganic Cowhorn Vineyard, that have been macerated in organic pear liqueur. Its for- ward, well-aged flavor tastes of brandy, fruit and burnt cream. The flavors of the Rogue Valley signature terroir include hints of sweet pine, wild ripened berries, hazel- nuts, morels and pears. Echo Mountain Blue was also recognized at the Competi- tion with a Bronze Medal; this is the eighth medal at the World Cheese Awards for Echo Mountain. Rogue River Blue: Made annually, start- ing on the autumnal equinox, it is produced at the turn of the season and made with late-season milk. At this time, the cows graze on grasses renewed by cooler temper- atures and make milk that is richer and higher in butterfat due to the advanced stage of the lacta- tion cycle. It is this special milk, reflec- tive of the unique seasonal influences of the Rogue River Valley, which is the very essence of terroir. This is the French concept that well-crafted foods represent a certain special essence of a region: the soil, the climate and the interaction of herd and pasture. This blue, finished with pear- brandy soaked grape leaves, has a decid- edly complex flavor that reflects the unique seasonal influences of the Rogue River Valley. Rogue River Blue has also won Best American Cheese and Super Gold at the 2012 World Cheese Awards in London and is a two-time winner, 2009 and 2011, of the Best of Show Award at the American Cheese So- ciety Competition & Judging. Originally known as King B Jerky in Idaho Falls, the regional jerky company grew into a national brand in the 1980s after Founder Roger Ball commandeered his wife's blender to make the first batch of "Shredded Jerky Stuff." The family-owned jerky company became a leader in the meat snacks industry. In 2000, Roger and his family sold the King B label to a competitor. The family ranches shifted to all-natural and organic production methodolo- gies, giving birth to a new company – Golden Valley Natural. Golden Valley Natu- ral specializes in beef, buffalo, turkey, chicken and pork meat snacks, with an emphasis on all-natural and organic products. Its 'health- ier-for-you' meat snacks rang true with con- sumers, who buy their products nationwide and in both Canada and Japan. Today, the company continues to grow and produce some of the finest all-natural, organic, gluten free, grass-fed and non- GMO jerky available in the industry.
