Thermablok Wins Award and Acclaim for Insulation Thermablok Inc., a NASA Spinoff list- ed company, was a winner in last year's product competition sponsored by Buildings Media. Finalists were evalu- ated by the BUILDINGS editorial staff for money-saving qualities. Not long after, Lahnie Johnson, President and Founder of Thermablok, was also selected as a HIVE 100 Innovator for his work on Thermablok ® (Aerogel product). Johnson was recognized because according to Hanley Wood, his contribu- tion has disrupted and transformed the way we think. In addition, Thermablok Aerogel Strips are featured in NASA Space Shuttle Enterprise Exhibit at the popular Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City. NASA technology Aerogel is not only the highest insulating material known, but also has the least amount of compressibility of any known insulation. It is used in the most extreme thermal environments, space suits, the Mars mis- sions, space shuttles, the Star Catcher mission, and clothing now used on Mount Everest expeditions. It is estimated that as much as 50 percent of the energy we consume in the U.S. is used to control the temperature in buildings. Of that, the major percent- age escapes through walls and windows in a process termed thermal bridging. This has always been a significant known problem. Until the introduction of NASA technology Aerogel, there has never been any insulation that could go between a metal stud and the drywall or outside sheeting that would not compress during installa- tion, thus losing its insula- tion properties. Adding just one Thermablok Aerogel Strip approximately 0.25" x 1.5", to only one side of each stud can increase the "R" value of a wall (regardless of insulation in the cavity) by an amazing 30 to 35 per- cent (DOE Oak Ridge labo- ratory test). Used by the military, NASA, Apple, Google, Stantec, Siemens, Kiewit, Turner, Clark to name a few, this is the ultimate break- through in insulation technology. Even in small home applications, research indi- cates that using Thermablok Aerogel Strips can provide energy savings of up to approx. $746 USD per year (in an average home of 2,400 square feet and a reduction of 3.9 tons of CO2 emissions). Relative to tax incentives/energy costs, one could recover the entire cost in two to three years. It may also be used in many other applications, including radi- ant flooring, concrete slab separa- tion, underground concrete and water pipe insulation and literally hundreds of other applications as the material is hydrophobic. Metal buildings can have a signif- icant energy efficiency increase with Thermablok Aerogel Strips in the wall and the metal roofing. Made in the USA, Thermablok is also available in blanket form. Formica Group Adds Man-Made Quartz Composite to 180fx Laminate Line Inspired by the look of traditional quartz, Formica Corporation is introducing its first man-made 180fx ® pattern, Quartz Composite, at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show. 180fx laminate is a best-selling line for Formica Group, marking a revolution in surfacing with true-to-scale patterns that offer visual drama unmatched by any other laminate. Modern, sophisticated high resolution patterns focus on a neu- tral palette – versatile enough to pair with any interior design concept. The Quartz Composite pattern is a true artistic composition created using concrete, recycled glass and a little bit of design magic. The Artisan™ finish on the Quartz Composite creates a smooth, slightly glossy surface that brings out the details of the pattern. The pattern is exquisitely detailed, with particulates ranging from medium to fine fill in the background, while a sweeping blue-gray vein visually fractures the slab. Quartz Composite was designed to address a desire for craft and artisanal work, reflecting the Millennial Maker trend. "Man-made materials, simplicity and true craftsman- ship provide a necessary respite from a digital world," said Gerri Chmiel, North American Residential Design Lead at Formica Corporation. "Materials are purposely unrefined and provide a first- hand connection to the mak- ers and the manufacturing process." Quartz Composite is one of 11 new designs introduced in the 2018 Living Impressions™ Collection by Formica Group. The collection was inspired by three macro trends – Neo Chalet, Millennial Maker, and Modern Gentleman – and includes four new designs in the 180fx by Formica Group collection, six new Formica ® Laminate designs and one new Formica Writable Surface design.
