Construction Marketplace Thursday, January 11, 2018 1 6 Builders Offer Efficiency with Goodman High-Efficiency Gas Furnaces Today's homeowners expect the latest innovative features when it comes to cozy indoor heating options. The good news is that today's energy-efficient gas furnaces aren't the same products that were installed at your parent's house. As an incentive to home buyers, many builders offer these higher-efficiency gas furnace models. The AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) rates how effec- tive a gas furnace is at converting gas to heat used to warm your home. Many older homes have gas furnaces with energy-efficiency ratings of up to 70 percent AFUE. New home builders can offer homebuyers the benefit of effi- ciency ratings ranging between 80 and 98 percent AFUE. The higher the per- centage number, the higher the certified energy-efficiency level which may keep a home buyer's monthly heating bills in check. 80% AFUE (non-condensing gas furnace) Minimum U.S. national efficiency rating. Single speed gas furnaces may cost less for initial installation, but variable speed units can provide additional sav- ings over the life of the gas furnace. Vents exhaust gases out of the home through chimney liner or metal flue pipe, typically through the roof. 90%-98% AFUE (condensing gas furnace) Utilizes a second heat exchanger to heat the air from condensed exhaust gases which helps increase the energy efficien- cy rating. Variable speed or modulating models can provide savings over the life of the furnace compared to single speed units. Often come with additional energy- efficient features designed to improve your overall indoor comfort. Some high-efficiency Goodman gas furnaces feature a modulating or multi-stage gas furnace. Like the heat on gas appliances, a stove or grill, the burner on a modulating or multi- stage gas furnace elec- tronically adjusts to pro- vide the exact amount of heat required to maintain the temperature on the thermostat or control system set- tings. This feature allows for precise heating control and energy-efficiency when compared to a single stage unit. This type of gas furnace is designed to operate at the lowest speed which pro- vides the home buyer with energy-effi- cient heating. But it's the Goodman Gas Furnace heat exchanger, the essential component of a gas furnace's performance, that stands above the rest. Goodman gas fur- nace heat exchanger features include: One-piece, tubular construction: Joints are eliminated, reducing weak areas. Wrinkle bend technology: This maintains the wall thick- ness of the curved section of the heat exchanger. Additionally, the wrinkle-bend technology provides a "turbula- tion" effect to maintain excel- lent heat transfer properties. Sloped design: The sloped angle of the secondary heat exchanger allows for optimal condensate drainage, which helps improve the performance of the heat exchanger. Stainless steel or aluminized steel: Heat exchanger materials with unique thermal and corrosion properties. These durable materials are selected to create a reliable heat exchanger, designed to pro- vide warmth in your home for many years. Your gas furnace is specifically designed for optimal performance with these properties in mind. If you have questions about the specifics of heat exchangers, ask your licensed profes- sional HVAC dealer. For more information, visit booth #P11 or go to www.goodmanmfg.com. SubLoc PRO SCRAIL Creates a Perfect Squeak-free Subfloor A perfect subfloor is one you never have to see again after the day it's installed. When constructed properly, a subfloor allows you to set it and forget it; no cupping of boards, no sinking or slanting, and defi- nitely no squeaking. To achieve this level of perfection, focus on these three steps: 1. Select the correct subfloor material. As contractors know, a quality end-product requires quality materials. Plywood is a commonly used material and is resistant to expansion and contraction, providing a solid result. Oriented Strand Board (OSB) is even better than plywood in density and water resistance. However, neither plywood or OSB are waterproof. Water absorption of any level can result in swelling at the edges in the event of moisture. The best-in-class subfloor material choice is High Performance Panels. These are an engineered, enhanced OSB product that resists water absorption. 2. Select the right fasteners. You wouldn't use white glue to attach a granite counter- top, would you? Of course not. A perfect subfloor made of best-in-class material needs best-in-class fasteners to install it, like SubLoc ® PRO SCRAIL ® , which are designed to give you a tight hold that lasts for years. Applying this combination fas- tener that installs like a nail but has the durability and adjustability of a screw takes your subfloor install to the next level. These types of fasteners won't loosen over time, like a nail might, which greatly reduces the chance of squeaky floors in the future. SubLoc PRO SCRAIL was developed to avoid subfloor squeaks that result from micro movement of the wood. SCRAIL fasteners take advantage of pneumatic technology and apply like nails, but can be backed out like a screw. 3. Take time for proper installation. Don't rush this job. Perfection takes time. First, your material should sit in the envi- ronment for at least 48 hours before installation to allow it to acclimate to the temperature and humidity. SubLoc PRO SCRAIL fasteners should be installed no more than 12" apart and aligned down the center of the joists. Where edges of the subfloor sheathing meet along a joist, the fasteners should be arranged in such a way that the fasteners in one subfloor sheathing are placed in the center of the space created by the fasteners in the other subfloor sheathing. In other words, when looked at it from above, the SubLoc PRO SCRAIL fasteners should be no more than 6" apart on alternating sides of the seam. The use of subfloor adhesive is also recom- mended. Take equal care when applying any under- layment as well. A perfect subfloor will ensure no squeaks, no popped tiles and no warped boards. It eliminates the need for call backs. The use of high-quality materials and fasten- ers, with careful installation, will guaran- tee subfloor perfection. Avoid customer issues with squeaky subfloors in the future by using the best materials and fas- teners, like SubLoc PRO SCRAIL, sold by FASCO America ® – master distributor for The BECK Fastener Group ® . ICC-ES PMG Accredited to Certify Products for the Mexican Market ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), an expert in plumbing product evaluation and certification is now accredited by entidad mexicana de acreditación (ema), to certify plumbing products to the Official Mexican Standards (NOMs). This accreditation, coupled with its American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Standards Council Canada (SCC) accreditations, which ICC-ES has had for years, allows ICC-ES to certify products for the entire North American market. Manufacturers that choose ICC-ES PMG to certify their products for Mexico will be authorized to mark their products with the official NOM emblem. Clients will also receive the new mxPMG mark with the Mexican identifier "mx" at the 8 o'clock position, confirming a product has been certified to meet Mexican requirements. "ICC-ES is pleased to receive ema Accreditation for our PMG Listing Program," said ICC-ES President Shahin Moinian, P.E. "This significant achievement allows us to better serve manufac- turers interested in product certification in the entire North American market." Some of the products ICC-ES PMG can now certify to Mexican requirements are: Flushometer Valves (NOM-005- CONAGUA-1996), Shower Heads (NOM-008-CONAGUA-1998), Water Closets (NOM-009- CONAGUA-2001), Fill and Flush Valves (NOM- 010-CONAGUA-2000). If you wish to apply for your product to be certified to meet U.S. and Mexico require- ments, call 888.422.7233, ext. 3772 or email espmg@icc-es.org.
