Consumer Electronics Daily News 2 1 Monday, January 8, 2018 How These Tesla & Apple Engineers Reinvented the Baby Monitor A few years ago, Tesla engineer Siva Nattamai's first child was born. He and his wife quickly realized that the standard baby monitors that were available on the market did nothing to alleviate the con- cern that most new parents have: Is my baby really okay when she's sleeping in her crib? "With other baby monitors, you could see your child, but just seeing an image didn't really tell you anything about their well-being." Siva continues, "As most engineers would do, I started exploring ways to obtain vital signs mon- itoring that could give us peace of mind. But the idea of attaching something to our tiny daughter's skin or clothing just seemed risky, and I didn't want to use sonar or radar, shooting rays at a baby." In his spare time, Siva continued working on this idea with a friend, Pavan Kumar, who was working in engineering at Apple. Finally, the call of entrepre- neurship was too strong: Siva left his role at Tesla, Pavan left his role at Apple, and Cocoon Cam was born. "We landed on the idea of creating a hybrid hardware-software system using Computer Vision, then we had a signifi- cant breakthrough and filed a patent. That led to our acceptance into an accel- erator program in Silicon Valley, during which we raised our first million dollars. I've never looked back," said Siva. This concept has bloomed and grown into a thriving company that has since raised a total of over $5M in venture capital funding. At this year's CES show in Las Vegas, Cocoon Cam is excited to introduce its newest product, Cocoon Cam Clarity. Clarity is groundbreaking in many ways, including offering contactless vital signs monitoring through innovative Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence technology, as well as deliv- ering instant alerts through parents' smartphones and even smart watch devices, so the parent is always aware when the baby needs their attention. Cocoon Cam's broad portfolio of patents ensures the company's position as the manufacturers of the only baby monitor- ing system in the world to offer contactless breathing monitoring in a single system with secure HD video and two way audio. With gorgeous, sleek industrial design worthy of the best consumer prod- ucts companies in the world, and the smartest of the smart baby monitors pow- ering the system, Cocoon Cam Clarity is truly the pinnacle of innovation in the baby monitoring space. Meet the founders and see the Clarity at booth #43558, Sands A-D. TSSI Facilitates Effective Management of Returned Goods Technology Solutions & Services, Inc., (TSSI), headquartered in San Bernardino, California and founded in 1999, is an R2-certified, full-service, reverse-logistics company specializing in remanufacturing solutions for consumer electronics, IT and mobility markets. The company provides economical cosmetic and functional refurbishment solutions in the Americas, within close proximity of client core markets in the U.S. TSSI's strategic locations provide clients with a fast return-to-market advantage. TSSI provides a host of customized services specifically designed to manage refur- bished products through to final disposi- tion. These services include screening, testing, repair, data collection and report- ing, as well as environmentally friendly disposal practices. The U.S. based company has two large production facilities just across the border in Mexico. By focusing labor- intensive operations in Mexico, TSSI provides clients with high quality, low cost labor very close to core resale mar- kets in the U.S. In addition to low costs, clients receive finished goods more quickly because the product never goes overseas. The entire process is quite sim- ple. Clients only interact with locations in California and Texas. TSSI partners with manufacturers, retailers and distributors in order to help them effectively manage returned goods. From a returned asset management perspective, the mobile industry seems to be where the PC industry was over 20 years ago. Since TSSI has already experienced the evo- lution of asset management in its own PC group and manages returned assets for brands such as HP and Lenovo, the company is able to offer knowledge that brings mobility part- ners that same maturity more quickly, thus optimizing the financial recovery associated with this type of goods. TSSI brings exceptional value to its clients because its services are designed to maximize recovery on goods that many people perceive as undesirable. These negatively perceived goods can be, potentially, positive and tangible assets on a company ledger. TSSI's services can be separated out or bundled together on an as- needed basis to suit the unique requirements of each individual client. Some clients only require broken glass LCD/LCM service while others may want whole phone refurbishment, kitting and fulfillment services. As product returns continue to have an increasing impact on a client's bottom line, clients are faced with a growing need to maxi- mize revenues from returned goods. TSSI strives to proactively provide clients with revenue-maximizing solu- tions to their unique asset recovery needs. For more information, visit www.tssius.com or call 866.447.6872. Navya Unveils First Fully Autonomous Taxi Navya unveiled Autonom Cab, an unprecedented response to the challenges of modern mobility, creating a veritable revolution in the urban mobility market. Autonomous, personalized and shared, this unique mobility solution answers the major challenges urban populations face traveling in and around cities. In a decisive move toward creating smart cities, the totally electric-powered Autonom Cab provides an intelligent transport service for individual trips in urban centers. The cab was designed from the outset to be autonomous, just like all the vehicles in the Autonom range, meaning that there is no cockpit, steering wheel or pedals. Able to carry one to six passengers, Autonom Cab is a fluid, continuous and effective trans- portation solution. The Autonom Cab is capable of speeds up to 55 mph, but will average closer to 30 mph as it travels in urban areas to conform with local speed limits. "Imagine what cities would be like if there were nothing but Autonoms run- ning on the road. No more traffic jams or parking problems, fewer accidents and less pollution," says Navya Chief Executive Officer Christophe Sapet. "At Navya, we recognize that the status of individual cars is rapidly changing, espe- cially among younger generations, many of whom don't have their driver's license and are less attached to the concept of owning a car. What they want are mobil- ity solutions available 24/7, ensuring their safety and well-being at a reduced cost. Autonom Cab is leading edge and will revolutionize both habits and tech- nology, enabling a great many people to gain access to a brand-new mobility solu- tion." Available as either a private or shared service, Autonom Cab places an emphasis on well-being and comfort and will offer a wide range of services bene- fiting from fully connected technology to restore freedom of mobility. Thanks to a dedicated smartphone application called Navya App, users can order an Autonom Cab with a simple click, and open and close the vehicle's door to start it up. Autonom Cab is also capable of pre- empting traffic jams so users can be on time despite unpredictable traffic. At the forefront of research and development and drawing on its produc- tion capacity in France and the USA, Navya is in a position to deploy the Autonom Cab quickly. Current plans are for the Autonom Cab to begin service in the second quarter of 2018. The Very Best Technology With Navya research and development expertise recognized around the world, Autonom Cab benefits from the most sophisticated multi-sensor technology on the market with no fewer than 10 Lidar sensors, six cameras, four radars, two GNSS antennae and one inertial meas- urement unit (IMU). These sensors pro- vide at least a triple redundancy across all functions, guaranteeing exceptional relia- bility. The on-board computer is capable of constantly merging data received by the sensor architecture. Autonom Cab's intelligence is based on high perform- ance steering and detection systems that combine a number of cutting-edge tech- nologies. Which means Autonom Cab can move around efficiently and safely, making the most appropriate decisions instantly. And all without a driver. Ultra-Precise Mapping Navigating open roads requires major mapping work and route optimization. In order to optimize navigation, Navya cre- ated its own mapping tool that generates the most comprehensive and precise car- tography. Navya's extensive trials around the world have provided the real-world experience necessary to enable its teams to continue perfecting and refining its performance. Communicative Design Recognizable by its rounded contours, Autonom Cab's silhouette is both mod- ern and robust. Outside, Autonom Cab has a colored light band that communi- cates with its passengers as well as pedestrians. Inside, the glass compart- ment provides users with a panoramic view of the city. Deployment Partnerships Navya already has various partnership agreements with transport specialists, notably with Keolis in Europe and the United States and with RAC in Australia. These partnerships will enable Navya to roll out fleets of Autonoms that will oper- ate on the open road in city centers. About Navya Navya, created in 2014, is a French com- pany and leading name in the autonomous vehicle market. October 2016 saw Navya secure a 30 million euro raise in capital together with its original shareholder, investment fund Robolution Capital, Cap Decisif Management with the FRCI Fund (Fonds RĂ©gional de Co-investisse- ment de la RĂ©gion Ile de France), holding company Gravitation, French groups Valeo and Keolis and Group8. Navya benefits from major advances in technol- ogy in the driverless, electric vehicle sec- tor thanks to a highly-qualified R&D team. Christophe Sapet, its Chief Executive Officer, is supported by a team of 150 people divided up between Lyon, Paris and Saline (Michigan). For more information visit navya.tech.
