As this issue of Gour- met News goes to print, we are coming up on the sad anniversary of the death of our founder, Lee Oser, a man whom none of us here on the staff of the company that bears his name will ever forget. We are also coming up on Thanks- giving as well as Christmas, and so it's a particularly fitting time to remember some of the reasons that I, personally, am grateful for the presence that Lee Oser has been in my life. Those who know me well will under- stand that this relationship between two opinionated, hardheaded, infinitely stub- born people could never have been without conflict. Over the years, these conflicts were sometimes poured out among the en- tire staff here in our office, and, while they could be temporarily traumatic, they often resulted in healthy change. I am truly grateful that Lee Oser was a man who was always willing to listen to another point of view, even when the mat- ter under discussion was a criticism of his own conduct. It takes a strong man to lis- ten to some of the criticism that I directed his way without simply using his power to make it stop and to alter his conduct ac- cordingly when he conceded that I had a point. He was also a man who accepted apologies gracefully, and he never held a grudge after I'd admitted it when I'd been wrong. There are many things that I admired about Lee Oser, but what I always ad- mired the most is that he knew how to stand his ground when he was right, and he knew how to admit it when he was wrong. I always considered him an adver- sary worthy of my steel, and there aren't many men I could say that about. He made me stronger. He made me smarter. He made me better. I miss him very much, and I'm grateful to have known him. All of us here wish you a wonderful hol- iday season, however you celebrate it, and a happy and prosperous New Year. And may you all be blessed by the friendship of people you respect and love. GN — Lorrie Baumann Editorial Director FROM THE EDITOR
