Why Cleanliness Can be a Game Changer in Racing By Kevin Radvany, General Manager, MDM Motorsports, LLC NASCAR is a sport of inches; races can be neck and neck until the very end, and often end in thrilling photo finishes. In a sport like this, attention to detail is para- mount. A crew that's a half-step slow, a change in the weather or excess grease can be the difference between coming in first place, and not placing at all. After competing at the top level of motorsports in North America for years, I have come to learn that the correct equip- ment, from the towel dispensers to the tires, is just as important as a talented driver. In my current role as the General Manager of MDM Motorsports, part of my job is to ensure that my drivers have access to the best equipment across three levels of racing: the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, the ARCA racing series and the K&N Pro Series East. By "right equipment," I don't just mean the vehicle. Obviously, we want to have the best car possible, but even the best car won't win you races if the rest of your equipment isn't held to the same standard. I find one of the most overlooked aspects in motor racing is cleaning and wiping the vehicle, as well as a clean work- ing space, for a num- ber of reasons. A clean vehicle, from the cockpit to the engine bay, is crucial. It's not just a matter of professionalism – a clean engine allows us to spot a leak in the engine the second we suspect one has developed. The garage should be impec- cable as well, as a messy or dirty garage can obviously lead to a number of prob- lems once the racing gets started. Good quality wipers are one of the easiest ways to uphold cleanliness around the garage. They should be absorbent, and ready to clean anything from grease, to oil stains, to the odd unlucky bird that finds itself in the wrong place at the right time. A low-lint, solvent suitable cloth ensures no undesired particles make their way into the paint job. Products like Tork's task-based wipers prevent any metal shavings from getting stuck in the rag and scratching the car or the pit crew's hands. Good, clean equipment is key to run- ning a NASCAR team efficiently, avoid- ing waste and guaranteeing we leave as little up to chance – and as much up to our drivers – as possible.
