Produce Show Daily Thursday, October 19, 2017 5 2 Original and Click-N-Go Twist-Ease Systems Create Positive Store Image Founded in 1989, and located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Twist-Ease, Inc., has been manufacturing its patented twist tie dispensing system for 28 years. Twist-Ease was designed by a produce manager who recognized the consumer desire for a reliable bag closure but was tired of the mess and inconvenience of bulk twist ties. With the Twist-Ease sys- tem, twist ties are glued together at the top so only one is taken at a time. This eliminates the problem that occurs when a customer intends to pull one tie but instead pulls several, which then either fall into the produce case or onto the floor. Loose ties in the produce case are not only unsightly, but can work their way into the drains, causing a clog. The loose ties on the floor are a potential slip hazard that need to be cleaned up. Cups filled with ties can collect garbage, fruit pits, nutshells, used tissue and discarded gum. Twist-Ease twist ties eliminate the potential of an unsanitary, clutter-filled twist tie container. Twist- Ease twist ties create a positive store image that is clean, organized and sani- tary. Additionally, using Twist-Ease twist ties saves both the labor and time required to refill bulk twist tie cups. The Twist-Ease system holds 1,200 twist ties per pack, versus a cup that holds only 300-400 loose ties. Twist-Ease ties also protect end use cus- tomers from cross contamination threats by keeping bags sealed tightly. Studies by the International Association of Food Protection have found yeast, mold, staph and coliforms living and growing on check- out conveyors. With Twist-Ease, the potential for conveyor-borne cross con- tamination is eliminated. As good as the original system is, Twist-Ease is always seeking innovation and improved technology. The new Click-N-Go system, launched in 2017, optimizes the original system by fitting more ties into a smaller footprint that consists of a metal mounting apparatus that is permanently affixed in the store. This new system will "click" into the mounting apparatus, pro- viding a fresh and clean dispenser with every refill. Also launching this year are 4-inch Flag Ties. Traditionally, Twist-Ease has manufactured 6-inch flag ties. In small retail departments, space is valuable. The 4- inch flag offers the same benefits as the original 6-inch flag ties: ample space to write and a long twistable area to tie around the bag while taking up less space. Using the Twist-Ease system pro- vides the best possible environment for the store chain and the end user. For more information, stop by booth #3206, visit www.twistease.com or call 888.623.8390. New York Apple Sales: Sharing the Best of New York with the World New York Apple Sales (NYAS) is a grow- er and full-service marketing firm that rep- resents nine different grower-packing operations in New York State. With the sales office located in Glenmont, New York, NYAS has orchards in Western New York and packing facilities in three distinc- tive growing areas of New York State. In the east, the Hudson Valley is home to five time-tested family owned growing and packing operations: Crist Bros, Porpiglia Farms, Fix Brothers, George W. Saulpaugh and Sons and Yonder Farms. These opera- tions are fourth and fifth generation fami- lies carrying on a legacy of apple produc- tion. Moving north into the classic McIntosh production region, Chazy Orchards produces some of the finest Macs, Honeycrisp and Sweetango in NYS. Situated a few miles from the N.Y.- Canadian border, "our north-country apples" benefit from the sunny days and cool nights. In the Western New York fruit- ing area, on the fertile shores of Lake Ontario, NYAS is part owner of Pomona Packing and Lake Ontario Fruit. Both are state-of-the-art packing facilities offering pre-sizing and internal defect sorting. In addition, NYAS represents Empire Fruit Growers Co-Op and packers. Empire oper- ates in a new packing and storage facility. All nine packing operations pack New York's Legacy varieties such as McIntosh Empire, Cortland, Macoun and Jonagold. In addition, consumer favorites such as Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, Pink Lady, Red and Golden Delicious are all featured vari- eties. Lake Ontario acts as a huge weather buffer for the apple growing region. It pro- vides late springs, which helps mitigate freeze damage, and a longer harvest season in the fall. The combination of the lake effect and the deep rich fertile glacier soils produces the best tasting apples in the country. NYAS packing houses are committed to providing only safe, exceptional fresh fruit that meets and exceeds customers' expectations. The facilities receive third party food safety audits, benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). Its grow- ers are GAP certified and meet Global Standards for Food Safety. Finally, Fish Creek Orchards, owned by NYAS and three other grower part- ners, exemplifies the most modern and up-to-date planting systems in the coun- try. Concentrating on new and exciting varieties such as KORU, Smitten, Sweetango, SnapDragon, Ruby Frost and Evercrisp, a portion of this farm is dedi- cated to nursery and testing of new vari- eties for the future. In addition to its New York State produced apples, NYAS imports the highest quality Scotian Gold Honeycrisp (Scotian Gold), Ambrosia and Sonya apples from Nova Scotia. Since Nova Scotia has a much later harvest season than NYS, the availability of their fruit helps extend its season on Honeycrisp. NYAS imports fresh KORU and Honeycrisp apples from New Zealand from March through August. New York Apple Sales is a certified WBENC, owned by Karrie Stannard. She purchased the company from her stepfa- ther, Marty Michelson, in 1999. Today the company is the largest apple market- ing company in the East and markets nearly five million cartons a year that are grown on over 5,000 acres. Onions 52 Growing in Many Ways By Trent Hartley, Marketing & Sales, Onions 52 We've all had this experience: you wake up one day and suddenly, your clothes don't fit, your pants are too short, your long sleeve shirts that used to come down to your fingertips now barely clear your elbow. Then, what at first feels strange and uncomfortable soon becomes a point of pride. You're growing, getting bigger, stronger and expanding your presence. You're coming into your own and step- ping into the place you were meant to occupy. Well, we here at Utah Onions have experienced the same thing … we've grown! Our growth certainly didn't happen overnight. We've been working hard in Utah, growing quality onions and getting them to folks on time, every day, for a long time. We've been forging strong family partnerships, bringing our quality products to new markets and making friends for so long, we almost didn't notice how big we've gotten. The truth is, we are more than just Utah onions now. Fact is, we grow onions in six states as well as Mexico, so we decided it was time to change our company name to something that better reflects our growth, while still keeping in mind our promise to our customers that we've held dear since our beginnings. So, we are no longer Utah Onions, we're now Onions 52. Onions, 52 weeks a year. We've grown beyond our Utah bor- ders; we needed to change our name and create a new logo, but that's all that we're going to change. A new name and company growth will not change the essentials of who we are. We have a heritage in this busi- ness that we'll always stand by, no matter how big we get. Onions 52 is always going to be absolutely synonymous with quality, consistency, reliability and ease. We've built a heritage that we're proud of, one of care and rigorous protection of the qualities that have allowed us to last this long. Our adherence to quality onions, delivered on time, year round — that's never going to change. For a long time now, we have been the go-to supplier of fresh, high quality onions year-round to our retail and food- service consumers, opening people's eyes to the versatility, variety and goodness of onions in Utah and beyond. With all that time, care and quality, it just makes sense that we acknowledge our growth and share that with all the friends we currently supply and the ones we are looking forward to meeting. We know our product and believe in its goodness. We strive to assure our customers they'll always have a reliable supply of quality onions 52 weeks a year. No excuses, just onions. That will never change. When you're thinking of onions, think Onions 52. We've got year-round appeal.
