As we go to print with our October issues, our country has been dealing with the effects of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma as well as remembering the horrific events of September 11, 2001. These things have more than a coincidence of dates in common. What all of these things have in common is that these challenges have brought out what we all regard as the best in each other. We've watched, on television and in person, everyday acts of heroism – people taking it upon themselves to lend a hand where it's needed. That's who we are, not just as Americans, but as human beings. As a species, we're cooperative and social and intelligent. We naturally reach out to our fellow human beings to lend a hand, share resources, tell stories and solve problems. It doesn't take a hurricane to make that happen – the American Cheese Society gets together every July to eat a lot of cheese and help each other figure out if there's a better way to sanitize the creamery. Grocers get together and talk about how to manage inventory so they can reduce food waste. Kitchenware retailers get together and talk about how they might improve their digital marketing. We all rely on each other to share what we have and what we know to help each other make our world a better place. As a country, we haven't been acting much like we really know that. It's been one of the most distressing outcomes of our last Presidential campaign, that we seem to have forgotten that we do this, that we even know how to do this. But way down in our DNA, even in the very reptilian parts of our lizard brains – the parts that harbor all the anger and panic that afflict us – we do know that when our world dissolves around us, we can absolutely count on our fellow human beings to help, and it doesn't much matter who they are or where they come f rom. Instead of remembering that, we've been acting as if our differences matter more than the simple basic truth that when the world blows apart around us and the water rises over our homes, the human being who's safe on higher ground but who sees the water rising over us is going to stop his own flight and reach out a hand to help. That's what we are. KN Lorrie Baumann, Editorial Director 4
