Wireless World 2 5 Tuesday, September 12, 2017 Pflanz, SmartWitness Product Director. The KP2, which can be added on to an existing telematics platform or be used as a stand-alone system, has a sleek, low-profile design, which attaches to any windshield with ease, making a small footprint impor- tant for the embedded components. The camera recording system is also tamper- resistant, with a tamper switch that sends out an alert if it is forcibly removed from the windshield. In addition to the integrated Sierra Wireless HL Series IoT Modules, the KP2 also includes a 1080p HD video cam- era with 170-degree wide-angle lens, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, GPS/Glonass, a 6-axis accelerometer, expansion capability up to 10 cameras, built-in CAN interface and a RESTful API available for integration with any web application. "We're most proud of the ADAS and two-way audio features because they help to prevent accidents from happening in the first place," said Pflanz. "Our ADAS tech- nology alerts the driver if he's following SmartWitness (Cont'd. from p. 1) too closely to the vehicle in front or if he/she changes lanes without signaling, the assumption being the driver is tired and drifting. The two-way audio allows fleet management or dispatch to easily call the driver via hands-free, or speak with the driver in the event of an emergency. None of this would be possible without a reliable communication technology, which is criti- cal for the real-time, two-way communica- tion that makes our in-vehicle products effective. Any downtime can be detrimen- tal to a tired driver and his/her employer. "Without our products, our cus- tomers would not have the visibility into their fleet's locations and traffic inci- dents, so their claims costs and disputed claim rate would stay high. Fleet driver behavior would not be monitored and reported, resulting in less incentive to follow the rules of the road, which ulti- mately creates a higher risk of incident." The SmartWitness KP2 is scheduled to launch Q1 2018 in the U.S. Learn more at booth #N.320. RB: Assimilating back into civilian life can be extremely difficult for the men and women of our armed forces. Many of our soldiers returning home are not equipped with the tools they need to re- connect to community and reengage fam- ily and friends. Cell Phones for Soldiers provides the capability to connect with health and medical providers and pursue prospective employment opportunities. Financially, the burden can be great. Returning men and women who so honor- ably served our country often earn as little as $30,000 in the line of duty. Assisting with domestic airtime and wireless servic- es upon return is an essential stepping stone in the re-acclimation process. WW: How great and urgent is the need? RB: The need is significant, but our abil- ity to serve is limited by donations. Today we ship over 3,000 phone cards per week to troops around the world. Military members we've served highlight that hearing the voices of their loved ones brings a deeper feeling of warmth and encouragement that letters simply can- not. As the deployed return home, the need still exists for communication serv- Cell Phones for Soldiers (Cont'd. from p. 1) ices to manage the transition back into civilian life. I personally spoke with a Gold-Star mother of a fallen deployed solider who said the last time she heard her son's voice was with a Cell Phones for Soldiers' phone card. It is just so very important. You never know what's going to happen. WW: What do you need from those at the GSMA Mobile World Congress Americas show? RB: Companies and individuals can sup- port our military and veterans through Cell Phones for Soldiers with end of life electronics inventory. As a 501c3 organi- zation, donations are tax deductible. Founded in 2004, we have over 4,000 collection sites across the country. Within just a few years, more than 25 million applications will be created, with 50 trillion gigabytes of data generat- ed. At present, there are more connected devices in the world than there are peo- ple. The future will see a highly connect- ed world. Is your business ready? Charting an IoT Business Pathway The updated and expanded guide pro- vides a pathway for everyone from exec- utives to product managers as they embark on the journey from unconnected product to connected services. Topics covered in the book include: the technol- ogy that connects the Internet of Things; sensor types, how they work and what they do; IoT security technologies; how to scale an IoT project; using big data analytics to gain insight from the IoT ecosystem; managing the lifecycle of an IoT deployment; the future of the Internet Aeris (Cont'd. from p. 1) of Things. Looking Forward Lots of challenges remain for this grow- ing industry. Standards still are in the developing stages for many IoT tech- nologies; energy demands, in many cases, will dictate usage; big data storage and analysis still are improving; and security, built into the design and not as an afterthought, is a must-have. The application of IoT will continue to evolve as new connected technologies come to the forefront. Smart, connected devices will influence our planet in ways yet unseen. Aeris, a pioneer and leader in the market of the Internet of Things, can help you on your journey. Designing Network Applications for Cloud Cloud-optimized network applications are based on design principles such as software portability across different platforms and efficient infrastructure utilization capabili- ties. This puts requirements on software modularity, interfaces and scalability. The telco environment places high demands on service availability and pre- dictability, requiring applications that are robust enough to handle multiple failures in surrounding infrastructure without compromising the services. A high degree of automation is implemented to mask and manage the complexity of many inter-operating applications. Optimizing the Application Performance – Finding the Right Balance Ericsson's cloud-optimized network applications are structured into microser- vices. These are designed, developed and maintained as separate components, de- coupled from infrastructure and other functions. A complex network service will consist of many microservices. The cost 5G networks (Cont'd. from p. 4) for integration and lifecycle management of software is a key concern for telecom operators. This means that the deployment modularity of software must be treated separately from the internal architecture. The 5G core network has different data that is stored and managed accord- ing to real-time and throughput require- ments. The decoupling and statelessness of the business logic in Ericsson network applications allows for a smooth transi- tion into a cloud-optimized setting. Ericsson's multi-tiered 5G cloud data layer provides an optimized storage solu- tion consisting of a set of orchestrated data tiers accommodating different cloud deployed storage technologies to best support the different data workloads. Ericsson Leads in 5G The Ericsson 5G platform is a compre- hensive foundation comprised of the core, radio, and transport portfolios, together with digital support systems, transformation services and security. Ericsson's 5G Core System provides key capabilities such as network slices with cloud-optimized applications, automa- tion and resource orchestration, support- ing a wide range of use cases for con- sumers, enterprises and industries. Twenty years ago we were just a group of people trying to scratch out a living by buying defective PCs and refur- bishing them. Today we have five loca- tions, nearly half a million square feet, and over 1,200 employees managing returns for HP and Lenovo. WW: Are you launching any new prod- ucts this year? If so, what? PS: Since we remanufacture something that has already been produced, we aren't so much 'launching' as offering expanded capacity and capabilities. TSSI has spent this past year focused on enhancing our service capabilities for mobile products. This includes increasing production capac- ity as well as enhancing our cosmetic capa- bilities to bring products closer to a 'like- new' condition. Many companies focus on making a unit functional, but TSSI brings a refurbished product back to or close to an A-Grade condition, thus allowing clients to increase resale by more than 30 percent. This is a sizable increase in recovery and is thus a key area of focus for TSSI. WW: Who are your target customers? PS: Ideal clients range from manufactur- ers and warranty providers to retail repair shops. Our goal is to become an exten- sion of our clients' asset recovery process TSSI (Cont'd. from p. 1) by providing cost-effective, revenue- maximizing solutions to whomever that client might be. We're accustomed to providing services on both a contract basis as well as one-time events. We're equally adept at managing run-rate returns and product recall or rework proj- ect. I'm more concerned with a client's need to have an intelligently structured asset management program than with a potential client's volume for us. WW: How do your products or services help your customers compete in their marketplace? PS: This is where TSSI really brings value because our services are designed to max- imize recovery on goods that many people perceive as undesirable, yet are still poten- tially tangible assets on a company ledger. We have processes that can expertly man- age returned goods from the beginning of the returns process through to final dispo- sition. Our services can be separated out or bundled together on an as-needed basis to suit the unique requirements of each individual client. Some clients only require broken glass LCD/LCM service while others may want whole phone refur- bishment, kitting and fulfillment services. TSSI strives to proactively provide clients with revenue maximizing solutions to their unique asset recovery needs.
