Hosted by the National Confectioners As- sociation, the Sweets & Snacks Expo is the industry's premier candy- and snack-buy- ing event. McKee Foods began during the height of the Great Depression when O.D. McKee began selling snack cakes from the back of his car. In 1960, McKee was trying to come up with a catchy name for the company's new family-pack cartons of snack cakes and arrived at the name of his four-year-old granddaughter Debbie. In addition to Little Debbie, McKee Foods is also to home to other well-known brands such as Drake's, Fieldstone Bakery, Heartland Brands and Sunbelt Bakery. Clif Bar launched in 1992, two years after baker and former mountain guide, Gary Erickson, got the inspiration for the product after a one-day, 175-mile bicycle ride. An instant hit with cyclists and climbers, distribution began at bike shops, outdoor stores and natural food retailers. Soon popularity grew to include outdoor adventurers of all types, and distribution has since expanded to include grocery stores, convenience stores and other retail outlets nationwide. "We're thrilled to have these two compa- nies with such rich histories exhibit at the Sweets & Snacks Expo," commented Larry Wilson, NCA Vice President of Industry Af- fairs. "We know brands like Little Debbie and Clif Bar have options when it comes to choosing which shows to exhibit at, and we're honored that they recognize the value the Sweets & Snacks Expo will offer their established businesses as they look to gain even greater penetration across all core channels in the marketplace." Both brands will make their Sweets & Snacks Expo debut in the McCormick Place's West Hall. The 2016 Sweets & Snacks Expo set an all-time record in atten- dance as more than 17,000 industry profes- sionals from more than 90 countries set foot in Chicago's McCormick Place to view the latest trends and innovations in the candy and snack categories. More than 760 companies showcased nearly four acres of product innovation. The 2017 Expo will take place May 23-25 at Chicago's Mc- Cormick Place. GN Two Iconic Brands to Make Sweets & Snacks Expo Debut in 2017 The Specialty Food Association's Summer Fancy Food Show has been named one of New York's top 100 most powerful events by BizBash, the leading trade media for event professionals. The show is the largest marketplace de- voted exclusively to specialty foods and beverages in North America. BizBash named it second in a rank of six food and restaurant industry events. To select and rank these events, BizBash considers a number of factors, including economic impact, buzz, innovation and the event's prominence within the communi- ties it intends to serve. The Summer Fancy Food Show and the rest of New York's Top 100 Events list can be found at www.bizbash.com/top-100. "So many high-profile events call New York home, and to choose the best from this diverse landscape is no easy task," said Beth Kormanik, BizBash Executive Editor. "Today's top events reflect a sharply honed sense of mission, thoughtful production and engaged guests – factors that all contribute to their success." "We are thrilled to have the Fancy Food Show recognized by BizBash as not only a top 100 event in New York, but as number two in the food space," said Specialty Food Association President Phil Kafarakis. "The specialty food scene is thriving, and our show continues to attract top buyers eager to make new connections with food arti- sans and entrepreneurs." The next Summer Fancy Food Show takes place June 25-27, 2017, at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. The show fea- tures more than 80,000 products from more than 2,500 exhibitors and 45 coun- tries. This year's highlights include a his- toric overview of specialty food in celebration of the association's 65th an- niversary, and a groundbreaking exhibit dedicated to the future of food.
