SAVE TIME, INCREASE EFFICIENCY WITH KNOTESTER Every company has a latest and greatest idea so teachers and students can do something different and new and amaz- ing. But with new technology and appli- cations introduced daily, they tend to make lives more cluttered for students, and especially teachers. This is where these companies get it wrong. Technology is supposed to evolve to make things better and easier; it doesn't always have to create something new and imaginative. What teachers and students need is a way to save time, concentrate on comprehension and increase efficien- cy throughout their lives. With this view on educational tech- nology, HoverCam decided to see if it could help. It looked at what people loved and used with its existing technol- ogy. Then it realized what was changing in education – the good and the bad. Finally, it combined all of this to see where a true educational solution was needed. What HoverCam found was that people loved its document cameras for their technology and performance for instruction and recording. What it real- ized was that teachers and tech directors were cluttered with one-off hardware and software that couldn't be used in every classroom, yet they loved the capability certain solutions had. What it saw was that there needed to be a solu- tion applicable to every classroom that offered the best features of its exist- ing products, and then some. To accomplish this, HoverCam presents KnoteSter. This isn't a technology that is aimed at allowing you to create or review anything completely new or different – just better. KnoteSter is a full suite of applications and capabil- ities centered around one concept: save time and increase efficiency for teachers and students. As a top-level overview, KnoteSter is free lesson capture soft- ware that allows instructors to flip their classroom, improve PD and cre- ate videos all while being able to book- mark relevant points on the timeline while recording. Instructors also bene- fit from its free revolu- tionary Document Camera and Virtual Whiteboard applica- tions that completely enhance how easy it is to teach. The student benefit is just as impactful. With mobile applica- tions and a dedicated web portal, students can review class materials and lessons at any time. They are able to add their own bookmarks, questions and even annota- tions, so they can go back and practice specific areas they need to review. Allowing students the flexibility to learn at their own pace and focus on compre- hending material in class is what HoverCam calls a true advancement in technology. VEX ROBOTICS TEAMS UP WITH REC FOUNDATION VEX Robotics is proud to be collaborat- ing with the REC Foundation to increase the number of girls involved with its edu- cation and competition programs. The company wants to show everyone that VEX Robots are #GirlPowered! It knows that half of all future problem solving heroes will be women. It's our responsi- bility to make sure they're excited about the opportunities they have to change the world. What is engineering/STEM? At its most fundamental level, engineer- ing is problem solving. STEM problem solvers come from a diverse array of backgrounds and find themselves in a wide variety of exciting environments. While the acronym STEM stands for "Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics" the term "STEM" is no longer limited to those four words. Why is it important? The world faces an unprecedented need for creative problem solvers. Right now in the U.S., only 16 percent of high school seniors are proficient in math and interested in STEM careers. For every two open STEM job listings, there is only one qualified available person. The U.S. will be short three million high-skilled workers by 2018. Why is it important women are involved? No two people see things exactly the same way. We all have different back- grounds and different approaches to cre- ative thinking. Wildly different back- grounds have wildly different ways to attack a problem. To be successful, a design team needs to see problems from all sides, and as such needs people who see things in different ways. Currently, products made by men seem to be made for men – women are 50 percent more likely to get seriously injured in a car crash due to seatbelts being made for the larger male frame. Companies who make prod- ucts that are effective for everyone have to work a little harder, but they are more successful and benefiting more people. This is why the best companies place such a huge value on bringing in people with diverse backgrounds; they need them if they want to find creative solu- tions. It lets teachers ditch paper reading logs and provides them with level books for their classroom library and an app that thinks like them to search and rec- ommend books for students. Kids love scanning books and logging these into their reading fitness tracker to see their reading stats grow, and parents love knowing ahead of time how many books their children need to read and what they can do to help. Moxie Reader lets students measure their progress against personalized goals, not just against other students who might read faster. The app even awards students with points when they help their class- mates read more. Students also get personalized rec- ommendations for the next just-right book from their class- room library, so they can keep on reading every day. Students read books that the app recommends by learn- ing the student's preferences and measur- ing those against other kids' books, from paperbacks to e-books. When the stu- dents finish their books, they'll review them for their classmates, influencing them to make quality choices for their own next-read lists. Parents don't need to sign reading logs to know what their children are read- ing, so the logs can stay at school. The app takes care of all the busywork for you, your students and their par- ents, tracking how each student is reading, so that your students can read more and you can teach more. Moxie Reader is just ready for its next Beta program. Students will love scanning their books – they just point the device at the ISBN on the books in your class library. It's fast, too – up to 20 books a minute can be scanned and lev- eled. For more information, go to www.moxie reader.com.
