EdTech Show Daily 2 1 Wednesday, January 25, 2017 ESD: What would you say makes your company unique? MR: In essence, we are the nation's lead- ing end-to-end solution provider for edu- cation technology and collaborative solu- tions in K-12, higher ed, government and corporate. With 65 offices nationwide, we combine large-scale purchasing power with the high-touch, consultative approach of a local specialist. ESD: What do you see trending in edu- cation technology, and how is Troxell addressing this evolution? MR: In less than two decades, the Internet has gone from fun to fundamen- tal. Statistics show that about 2.5 billion people are connected to the Internet today. Experts are even saying they expect there to be about four billion users by 2020. As a result, the global digital economy is growing at more than 10 percent a year – that's more than the economy as a whole. So, it's an increas- ingly important source of growth, and frequently, jobs. So, for educators, there can be no greater purpose than to pre- pare students for this fast-growing digi- tal revolution. For Troxell, we feel it is more important than ever to make edu- cational technology solutions an indis- pensable part of the classroom of tomor- row, today. ESD: Tell our readers about what type of solutions Troxell is introducing to meet these challenges. MR: The fast-changing digital econo- my will require students and teachers to Troxell (Cont'd. from p. 1) be fluent in digital technologies and highly adaptable to fast-changing tech- nology trends. The 1:1 learning envi- ronment lights a spark for students and teachers and puts them on the path to lifetime learning and discovery using technology. We are helping empower students and teachers with our complete and integrated 1:1 Learning Suite solu- tions, featuring a wide range of devices, peripherals, management platforms and applications, as well as flexible financ- ing options, configuration services and more. As for Preparing 21st Century Students for a Global Society, collabora- tion is an essential skill for students. Collaborative learning spaces enable stu- dents to work in groups to solve prob- lems, discuss ideas and experiment with different approaches. Furniture becomes modular and movable, audio-visual equipment can "pop up" as needed and STEM gear invites discovery and learn- ing. Making classrooms more collabora- tive is just another of our solutions. We provide expert guidance to our cus- tomers, helping them create collaborative learning spaces needed to meet federal mandates and develop future leaders. ESD: What is the outlook for Troxell in 2017? MR: We will continue to build deep root- ed relationships with our customers, strive to understand current market needs and technological trends, and provide end to end solutions for K-12 and higher ed for today and tomorrow. When the tests are taken online, the scores and grades automatically populate the Gradebook. Focus understands that there is sometimes a lack of quality resources available to teachers, so having the abil- ity to share these resources is important. Teachers often collaborate on lessons, activities and tests, within both school and district wide, to improve the quali- ty of their teaching, and easily create more thorough course instruction. With Focus, teachers and district-level administrators can share test questions and lessons with each other. This improves the quality of work in the classroom, easily allows for more stan- dardized lessons, tests and assessments across schools and districts, and offers teachers a larger pool of test questions for faster test creation. Focus School Software (Cont'd. from p. 1) Once the tests are created, taken and graded, teachers and school administrators need an assessment tool that allows them to make informed decisions based on accurate student performance data. Focus provides sev- eral tools and reports for teachers and administrators to analyze student per- formance. Item analysis is available for individual test questions, and the Standard Test Report and Analyze Test features provide an overview of stu- dent performance on tests. Teachers and administrators can also analyze student proficiency in specific stan- dards. From test creation to student per- formance reporting, the Focus Assessment Component is the solution to meet your districts' needs. Visit Focus School Software at booth #1941. It's the perfect answer because the data Emfit QS provides is so valuable to a serious competitor that the small cost per month for a roaming data SIM card feels like nothing. Especially when you get to a new resting place and can focus on the most important thing: sleep." Emfit QS is a contact-free sensor installed beneath the mattress using small electronics placed on the floor and con- nected with WiFi, or now cellular data net- works. A web-based application that is also optimized for use with smartphones provides comprehensive data about physi- cal recovery from exercise, readiness and sleep quality. Emfit QS calculates the total amount of sleep, percentages of recuperat- ing REM and deep sleep, heart rate, respi- ration rate and activity during the entire night. Evening RMSSD value of heart rate variability shows accumulated stress over the course of the day, and morning RMSSD indicates recovery status and readiness for a new day. RMSSD data allows you to optimize a training schedule according to your actual body require- ments, thereby avoiding overtraining and achieving peak performance. That's one of many reasons Emfit QS is especially beneficial for athletes. Long-term evalua- Emfit (Cont'd. from p. 1) tion of HRV indicates how effectively exercise or lifestyle changes are affecting performance and everyday life. Emfit QS is one of many devices that Sky Christopherson, world record holder and Founder of OAthlete, utilizes to create sustainable performance with Olympic athletes. "Working with Olympic athletes, we use 'Data not Drugs' to boost every aspect of athlete health and performance. Moral and health arguments aside, we believe using data to leverage the natural strengths of our bodies will always win over the long run. Since sleep is foundational to health and performance, it is a focal point of our program and we have used every sensor on the market. The Emfit system is creat- ing new capabilities in understanding sleep both with the goal of improving it, but also using it to better inform training decisions as we moved towards truly individualized training models. The ease of use and accuracy of Emfit is also unprecedented. As a result, the Emfit sys- tem is now an integral part of our 'Data not Drugs' program as we build a future that uses more data and less drugs, in sport, and hopefully in health." HOW RAIDERTV STREAMS DAILY LIVE NEWS PROGRAM WITH TELESTREAM WIRECAST It's 7:55am and RaiderTV, a student-pro- duced live news program at Cleveland Middle School, is streaming live to the school's students and staff. RaiderTV is part of a holistic cur- riculum at Cleveland Middle School in Cleveland, Tennessee, under the umbrel- la of communications that focuses on oral, print, web and video communica- tion delivery systems. RaiderTV is a class, offered to eighth grade students at Cleveland Middle School, which pro- vides students with real-life experiences in media, communications and leader- ship. The show airs every school morning and reaches 1,300 students and staff, and then additionally reaches about 75 to 100 families after school hours. The broad- cast includes the latest news and events at CMS, and it highlights varying aspects of school life. Students produce a special feature segment for each school day. On- demand videos are available for shows from the last two weeks for the conven- ience of students, parents and faculty. There are fourteen total staffed posi- tions, and a student-producer oversees the production. RaiderTV has been rec- ognized both locally and nationally for its high production value and professional- ism in its broadcasts. Challenge In the beginning, Cleveland Middle School needed a way to produce its daily news show and tried using various streaming solutions. Unfortunately, the programs were unreliable, used too many system resources and struggled to main- tain audio and video sync. In addition, the pixelation on high motion video was too great and lowered the produc- tion quality. Solution In the end, Cleveland Middle School implemented Telestream Wirecast live streaming produc- tion software. In addition to pro- viding excellent streaming stability, Wirecast allowed them to use complex graphics during the production of the show without expensive or complex graphics systems with alpha channels, and it was easy to use. "We consistently produce high qual- ity broadcasts with Wirecast, and the best part is that it's so easy to use that the stu- dents just click a button to start the stream," says Cody Raper, Communications Instructor at Cleveland Middle School. The Setup A 2012 iMac with an Intel i5 processor is located in the master control room next to the soundboard. Four Canon XF-105 cameras are run over HD-SDI to send camera feeds from three different sets back to the master control room. The soundboard is a PreSonus StudioLive 16.0.2 digital mixer, and there are five Shure SM93 lavalier microphones. Non-keyed graphics and packages are provid- ed from the iMac running RenewedVision's ProPresenter. Results By implementing Wirecast to produce RaiderTV, Cleveland Middle School has seen an increase in student engagement. Students now have an enhanced aware- ness of special events and extracurricular activities through the special features on the show. Additionally, RaiderTV is used for trivia questions and content refresher segments, which helps prepare students for standardized testing. In a nutshell, the daily live stream has unified the school, enhanced school pride and provided an avenue to effectively communicate infor- mation. Visit Telestream at booth #845.
