Construction Marketplace Thursday, January 12, 2017 4 2 ICC EVALUATION SERVICE LAUNCHES NEW AFFILIATE PROGRAM ICC Evaluation Service (ICC-ES), the experts in building product evaluation and certification, has introduced a new Affiliate Program to support ICC-ES' clients (build- ing, plumbing, mechanical and gas product manufacturers). The Affiliate Program will help increase the visibility and awareness of manufacturers' products in the built industry through a number of additional marketing support initiatives, the most important one being the linking of clients' reports and listings to the ICC's online codes portal, premiumACCESS and short- ly thereafter, to ICC's free online publicACCESS code site. "ICC-ES is pleased to launch this new Affiliate Program, offering manu- facturers opportunities to increase aware- ness of their ICC-ES reports and list- ings," said ICC-ES President Shahin Moinian, P.E. "This program will also add valuable exposure to specifiers as well as building departments across the United States, who have a long history of using ICC-ES reports in their relevant jurisdictions." The ICC-ES Affiliate Program con- sists of three affiliate levels (Gold/Silver/Bronze) for purchase and valid for 12 months from the date of application. Affiliate benefits differ for each level and include the following: e- code premium and e-code public access linking of evaluation reports and listings (Bronze/Silver/Gold Level); ICC-ES news releases on new ICC-ES report or listing (Bronze/Silver/Gold Level); ICC-ES affiliate recog- nition – profile/logo/website link on affiliate page (Gold Level); unlimited Acceptance Criteria (AC) access (Gold Level); ICC news releases on new ICC-ES report or listing (Silver/Gold Level). ENHANCE PRODUCTIVITY WITH MOBILE TECHNOLOGY Like most industries, construction has been largely transformed by mobile tech- nology. The ability to connect those in the construction industry and provide instant access not only to people, but also back-end data, plans, procurement and models is empowering a wave of produc- tivity across the industry. According to Autodesk, 75 percent of construction dollars are spent in the field, yet less than 10 percent of technol- ogy spending is allocated there. However, companies are increasingly relying on mobile devices and applica- tions – especially with the evolution of jobsite-ready ruggedized devices like those from Kyocera and industry-specif- ic applications designed to maximize efficiency and labor tracking on jobsites from companies like busybusy. With these tools, large and small construction companies are extending the footprints of their in-house technology investments to improve communications, decision-mak- ing and efficiency in the field. Mobile devices and applications are helping connect people to vital informa- tion across the following construction industry practices: Project and Field Management – Applications like busybusy, when used with jobsite-ready hardware like Kyocera's, not only facilitate communi- cation, but also streamline the tracking of resources, man-hours, materials and more. Communications and Connectivity – Rugged mobile phones are being used to facilitate instant voice, text and email communications between jobsite workers and the main office. Push to Talk (PTT) capabilities also empower workers, sub- contractors and suppliers with one-touch walkie-talkie style communications for instant communications to individuals or groups. Materials and Resource Management – Procure materials, manage sup- plies, assign workers, track man-hours in real time right from jobsites. A study by Engineering News Record estimates that 93 percent of general contractors and 87 percent of subcontractors use some sort of mobile device at construc- tion sites to improve communications and streamline efficiencies across the planning, designing and building phases of projects. Rugged hardware and applications designed to meet the unique, specific needs of the industry are requirements that should be inherent to every mobile device used in construction. The busy- busy mobile application was designed by construction industry veterans to elegant- ly meet real-world demands. Meanwhile, Kyocera's rugged devices are built to withstand construction jobsite condi- tions, which may include dusty, dirty, wet environments, as well as the threat of drops from heights. They are certified to IP68 and Military Standard 810G standards for water- proofing (up to six feet deep for up to 30 minutes), dust- proofing, shock, vibration, extreme temperatures and more. They offer Glove and Wet Touchscreen Operation for use when on the jobsite or in the elements. For more hazardous job- sites, they are even certified for use in some hazardous work environments where concentrations of flammable gases, vapors or mists are not normally present in explosive concentrations but may exist (Nonincendive, Class I, Division 2, Group A-D, T4). According to VDC Research, rugged devices can save 46 percent on overall total cost of mobility in the workplace. Using leading mobile applications like busybusy's on those devices extends the value even further. PROTECT BUILDINGS FROM MOISTURE WITH FORTIFIBER An interview with Chris Yount, President, Fortifiber ® . CM: What does Fortifiber do? CY: We've been in the business of pro- tecting buildings from moisture problems for more than 75 years. By using our sim- ple three step weatherization system, builders can be confident that that their projects will be protected from moisture intrusion. They won't have to return to make costly repairs or deal with mold remediation. We give builders one less thing to worry about. CM: How did your family get started in the business? CY: My grandfather, Stanley Yount, started Fortifiber in 1939. During World War II, the company supplied the Allied forces with weather protection for ammunition. The company really took off in the 1960s, when it pioneered the modern weather-resistive barrier with the launch of Jumbo Tex ® Grade D Building Paper. Shortly after, Fortifiber launched flexible flashing, which quickly replaced cumbersome metal flashing. The new flexible flashing was easy to use and cost-effective to install. Today, Fortifiber is a family business in more ways than one. A number of our employees are second generation, so their family legacies have joined with ours. We even have customers that have been with us for two or three generations. CM: What is the company best known for? CY: We are not too big to care. Customers appreciate that we take the time to work with them on the jobsite. They also tell us our customer service is better than most ven- dors they deal with. We have real people that answer the phones and build relationships. CM: How does Fortifiber do its part for the planet? CY: We've been focused on sustainabili- ty for a long time – well before it became fashionable to be 'green.' In the past few years, we have reduced our energy usage by nearly one-third and have a long- standing recycling program. We are com- mitted to reducing our carbon footprint and recently installed 1,786 solar panels on our factory roof in Nevada. CM: What's new for the show? CY: We are pleased to be showcasing Moistop ® Sealant and Liquid Flashing, a product that does double duty. We are in the early phases of the roll out of WeatherSmart ® Drainable, which has 95- plus percent drainage efficiency. We also offer what we believe to be the most comprehensive, most straightfor- ward warranty on the market. We cover materials plus labor for 15 years, without the hassles and caveats of other manufacturers. CM: What does the future hold? CY: We are always working on new products in the lab and with real builders in the field. Stay tuned for some exciting innovations in 2017. CM: Tell our readers something most people don't know about you. CY: I love building things. Recently I made a wood kayak frame that we cov- ered with WeatherSmart Housewrap. I just thought it would be fun to try the ASTM D-779 boat test in real life. I pad- dled around Lake Tahoe for hours. I'm always creating something with my saws. Just gotta watch out for my fingers!
