Consumer Electronics Daily News Saturday, January 7, 2017 4 0 PILLDRILL SECURES FUNDING TO SOLVE ONE OF HEALTHCARE'S MOST COSTLY PROBLEMS PillDrill, Inc. announced that its flagship product PillDrill, a smart medication tracking system that intelligently mod- ernizes the pill taking experience, has been named a CES 2017 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Tech For A Better World category. Designed with a careful blend of technology and humanity by a team that includes a former engineer for the Amazon Kindle, PillDrill is an intuitive scanning system that simplifies the laborious task of daily medication man- agement. The heart of the system is the PillDrill Hub, an attractive, compact device that sits next to the user's pills and issues clear audio-visual alerts when doses are due. To indicate that a dose has been taken, the user waves their medication container in front of the Hub. Each scan (or lack thereof) then triggers a real-time update to fam- ily members and other concerned par- ties. This quick, familiar gesture – a scan – is both simple and powerful, resulting in improved adherence for the user and peace of mind for those who support them. The company, having previously been named Best New Home Healthcare Product by more than 100 retail pharmacy buyers at ECRM and more recently awarded Frost & Sullivan's 2016 New Product Leadership Award, also announced that it has closed $3 million in funding from undisclosed angel investors. PillDrill will use the new funds to grow its dis- tribution channels and cement its prod- uct leadership position. "We're thrilled at the response to the product since our launch in April," said Peter Havas, PillDrill's Founder and Chief Executive Officer. "We've heard from so many of our users about how the simplicity and elegance of PillDrill has completely transformed their medication management experi- ence – or that of their loved ones – for the better. Medication adherence is a huge challenge across the board, and we're committed to bringing PillDrill to the mass market to help solve it." Additionally, Annette Campbell- White has joined PillDrill's Board of Directors. Campbell-White served as Founder and Senior Managing Partner of MedVenture Associates, a leading biomedical venture capital firm, from 1986 until her retirement in December 2015. "Medication adherence is consis- tently one of the biggest challenges in healthcare, and throughout the years I've seen dozens of medical technology companies try and fail to address it," said Campbell-White. "PillDrill is dif- ferent. The depth of thought these guys put it into it, its sheer usability and ele- gance…I think PillDrill is the first med- ication management product people will actually want to use." FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES NEW MEMBERS The Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF), a leading Internet of Things (IoT) standards body, announced the addition of 68 new member organiza- tions including Haier Group, LG Electronics and NETGEAR, Inc., growing membership to more than 300 companies. As one of the biggest IoT consortiums, this surge in membership follows the announcement that OCF and the AllSeen Alliance merged under the OCF name and bylaws with the mutual goal of creating a common IoT standard. With analysts predicting more than 25 billion devices by 2020, the need to ensure interoperability is greater than ever. OCF is doing its part through industry consolidation and more than 15 strategic liaisons with industry lead- ing organizations including Thread Group and the Industrial Internet Consortium. OCF also continues to make it easier than ever to certify prod- ucts, recently opening six labs across the globe. "We're very excited to see the indus- try's response to the merger, which has inspired nearly 70 new companies to work with us to develop a common stan- dard for IoT," said Dr. Matthew Perry, newly appointed President of Open Connectivity Foundation. "The addition of these new members makes OCF one of the largest consortiums in the industry, furthering our ability to create open and free IoT standards that allow organiza- tions to provide fully interoperable prod- ucts to consumers." In addition, OCF is announcing two new directors that were elected to repre- sent its Platinum member companies – Anoop Mohan, Vice President of Product, XFINITY Home for Comcast, and Olivier Carmona, Director of Business Development for AwoX. They will serve a two-year term. OCF is at CES demonstrating prod- ucts across a variety of industries, includ- ing smart home, automotive and health- care. It will have interop zones that show how IoT comes to life in living rooms, kitchens and connected cars. About Open Connectivity Foundation Billions of connected devices (devices, phones, computers and sensors) should be able to communicate with one another regardless of manufacturer, operating system, chipset or physical transport. The Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) is creating a specification and sponsoring an open source project to make this pos- sible. OCF will unlock the massive opportunity in the IoT market, accelerate industry innovation and help developers and companies create solutions that map to a single open specification. OCF will help ensure secure interoperability for consumers, business, and industry. The AllSeen Alliance now operates under the Open Connectivity Foundation.
