NATURALLY HEALTHY www.gourmetnews.com n SEPTEMBER 2016 n GOURMET NEWS N H 2 2 SuperSeedz Announces New Mini Pouches, Gives Consumers Convenient Way to Snack Healthy SuperSeedz ® , creator of gourmet, dry- roasted pumpkin seeds, is expanding its fam- ily of products with a convenient, new one-ounce size mini pouch available in six flavors, including: Maple Sugar & Sea Salt, Sea Salt, Somewhat Spicy, Cinnamon & Sugar, Coco Joe and Super Spicy. The mini pouches are expected to be priced between $1.49 and $1.99 and will ship in a display- ready, 12-count caddy. "The new, smaller size pouch is a healthy, on-the-go snack that can easily be tucked in- side luggage, school lunches, backpacks, purses or desk drawers," said Kathie Pellic- cio, Owner and Founder of SuperSeedz. "And one of the best things about them is that they are cute little standup pouches that don't fall over and spill on your desk after you've opened them." It has been a busy and rewarding 12 months for SuperSeedz. In 2015, it launched Maple Sugar & Sea Salt, a flavor that has quickly become one of its most popular fla- vors; shortly after the launch, the flavor was awarded The Most Innovative New Premium Snack Award at the 2015 Sweets and Snack Expo. In January 2016, SuperSeedz announced it had become the No. 1 Premium Pumpkin Seed brand in grocery stores. Since becom- ing No. 1, SuperSeedz is now the fastest growing seed brand by dollar volume in the food channel, according to a recent Information Resources Inc. report. SuperSeedz offers more plant- based protein than other nut sources such as peanuts, pistachios, al- monds and chia seeds. It is Non- GMO Project Verified, free of cholesterol and trans-fats is vegan and vegetarian and is allergen friendly – peanut-free, tree nut-free, egg-free, dairy-free, fish-free, shell- fish-free, soy-free and made with gluten-free ingredients. About SuperSeedz Rooted in homegrown beginnings, the idea for SuperSeedz was cooked up by Founder Kathie Pelliccio in her own kitchen as a healthy snack for her family. Soon after de- veloping the tasty, nutritious treats, Kathie began selling them in local farmers markets and independent retailers – the brand has since grown from a small seedling into the fastest growing seed brand in America. Currently available in nine mouthwatering flavors – Sea Salt, Super Spicy, Some- what Spicy, Tomato Italiano, Curious Curry, Coco Joe, Cin- namon & Sugar, Really Naked and Maple Sugar & Sea Salt – SuperSeedz are dry-roasted in small batches without shells, using a proprietary, artisanal pan-roasting technique that bakes the season- ing right in to each seed. The result is an en- hanced snacking experience with unparalleled taste and a delightfully addict- ing crunch. SuperSeedz are sold at grocery, health food and gourmet food retailers across the U.S., including Whole Foods, Sprouts and Safeway, Inc. stores. They can also be purchased online at www.superseedz.com. For more information, visit www.super seedz.com or stop by booth #544. Why Do We Need to Save the Bees? Honey bees pollinate more than 100 essential food crops, such as fruits, nuts and vegeta- bles. One out of every three bites of food Americans consume comes from a plant vis- ited by bees or other pollinators. Recently, honey bees have been dying by the tens of millions. These deaths are caused by Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), a phenomenon linked to the drastic rise in the number of dis- appearances of western honey bee colonies in North America. Although there are many theories as to the cause of CCD, there is still no specific cause identified by researchers. CCD has wiped out some 10 million bee- hives over the past six years. The death rate for colonies hit 45 percent annually in recent years, resulting in nearly one-third the num- ber of honey bee colonies in the U.S. as there were in 1947. In 2012, GloryBee, an Oregon-based in- gredient company, launched its Save the Bee social initiative program to directly impact organizations dedicated to saving honey bees and bee health issues. GloryBee Honey, Bee- keeping and HoneyStix brands donate one percent of annual retail and select bulk to help fund honey bee health research. As part of its mission to support ongoing education about this important issue, Glory- Bee supports the Oregon State University Honey Bee Lab's research on bee nutrition and health, and works closely with beekeep- ing associations across the nation to facilitate education about the care of bees. This past April, at its annual Bee Weekend event, Glo- ryBee was able to present a check for over $65,000 to the OSU Honey Bee Lab, which was nearly 50 percent more than last year's contribution. GloryBee hopes to give even more in 2017 and be- lieves that by working together, a cure can be found that will Save the Bee. With such a strong commitment to saving the bees, it is no surprise that GloryBee is passionate about honey. Most of GloryBee's honey varieties come from the Pacific North- west and are produced by local beekeepers. Its imported Non-GMO Project Verified or- ganic honeys are purchased from coopera- tives of beekeepers that are very con- scientious about the treatment of their bees and the quality of the honey. GloryBee ensures all its honey products are 100 percent pure. While being minimally processed and packed in its Eugene, Oregon facil- ity, these honeys retain their unique flavor, quality and nutritional profile. Glory- Bee carries more than 15 regional, organic and blended honey varieties. To learn more about GloryBee, visit www.glorybee.com.
