We now have systems in over 30 countries and the number of com- mercial labs using the systems has great- ly increased. Sales for the first quarter of 2016 are moving at an even higher pace. FMD: What accounts for the growth? CK: As I said last year, there are a num- ber of dietary fiber methods that are being used by the industry right now. Each of the methods are very labor-intensive with technician manipulation throughout the process. For AOAC 991.43 there are over 35 manual steps that the user has to do. Additionally the methods, which use frit- ted glass crucibles, are known for slow filtration times and clogged filters. I have even had customers tell me that they have had filtration for some samples take well over four hours. This creates a time-inten- sive bottleneck. Add to that the pressure on many laboratories to deliver results faster and automation is the only way to go. I would also have to add that we have had more opportunities to present the facts related to accuracy and precision throughout the year and that has gotten a lot of attention. FMD: What's your biggest market for dietary fiber? CK: Surprisingly, China is the biggest user. However, the U.S., Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom are catching up. I think the United Kingdom is the country with the most labs having multiple instruments at a single location. The newest entries are in places like Brazil, Uruguay, Switzerland, South Africa, Kuwait, Thailand, Japan and the A NK O M Techno lo gy (C o nt'd. fro m p. 1 ) UAE. Actually, we have a number of sys- tems around the Middle East. FMD: What are your next steps as it relates to the dietary fiber system? CK: We are constantly monitoring use. We have seen the system analyze thou- sands of different sample types. Likewise, the industry is looking at meth- ods and issues around samples such as resistant starch that confound manual methods and quite frankly the chemistry involved, whether manual or automated. Our goal is to keep up with any changes that arise. Right now there is talk about some potential modifications to the CODEX methods that include an HPLC analysis of the filtrate. The change (if approved) will change some enzyme concentrations and incubation times. We will be ready to implement should the science support the option. FMD: Tell our readers again about ANKOM Technology and what you do. CK: We are a manufacturer of automated wet chemistry solutions. We automate labo- rious analytical methods that require signif- icant technician intervention. Our goal is to honor the chemistry and maintain the pri- mary analytical status, while eliminating labor. Our dietary fiber and fat extraction products probably get the most attention in the food industry, but long before that we were (and are) known for advancements and improvements in detergent and crude fiber analysis that has had significant impact in laboratories focused on animal nutrition. We have users in over 120 countries and an incredible distributor and technical service network around the world. For more information, visit ANKOM Technology in booth #3353. Employee and Customer Service SVZ's customer's needs are essential to its success. SVZ strives for a high stan- dard of service, with a focus on strong communication and proactive collabora- tion. It is vital to ensure a safe working environment and that SVZ employees are engaged in a broad training and develop- ment program. Farmer Training SVZ's agronomists share their knowl- edge of the latest legislation and infor- mation surrounding the use of pesti- cides and fertilizers. This enables its partner growers to maximize their agri- cultural output, and guarantees trans- parency throughout the supply chain.
