The transformation of America's school libraries will take many forms, shapes and creative turns but what is most certain is that change is surely on the way. The goal at Mackin is to be totally proactive on behalf of every school librarian and every school library program as they engage and continue the necessary transformation of their profes- sional roles and the roles of their school libraries to meet emerging educational challenges. In response, Mackin has created the Transform Your School Library (or TYSL) initiative, a forum where like- minded educators who are excited about the transformation of school libraries can have an arena to work within and help to secure the future of school libraries and school librarianship. This new undertak- ing, spearheaded by Mackin, is truly essential to the future of the school library and the educational process. Thought leaders throughout the nation know that the school library must change and truly transform to provide the level of service that will be required to enhance the future of K-12 education and the student expe- rience. The transformation of your library may be subtle or it may be drastic, but it is a transition that surely will be. The TYSL movement will not only seek to expand knowledge but encourage con- versation and dialog that will inspire cre- ativity. The revolution has begun and as a result, numerous schools and school BRINGING SCIENCE TO LIFE: HOW WEDO 2.0 HAS TAUGHT SECOND GRADERS TO CODE By Breigh Rhodes, second-grade Teacher at Rollins Place Elementary School in Zachary, Louisiana As a second-grade Teacher, I want my students to leave my classroom with the knowledge and skills to think for them- selves, to gather evidence, and to be able to stand up to a problem and solve it. Nine years ago, during my first year as an educator, I began using LEGO ® Education solutions in my classroom. That year, I wrote a grant and acquired a set of LEGO Education MINDSTORM NXT robots for my students after com- ing across the product and seeing the potential that it had for encouraging cre- ative and critical thinking in students in a meaningful and highly engaging way. Soon after that, I was looking for a high- quality resource to bring science content and standards to life for my diverse group of learners. WeDo, a robotics solu- tion from LEGO Education that is s p e c i f i c a l l y geared towards elementary stu- dents, proved to be a perfect fit! My students quickly became huge fans of the LEGO Education prod- ucts – and as a teacher, I love them because they are durable, safe and easy for elementary learners to use, not to mention that the possibilities for what students can create are endless. In January, when the new WeDo 2.0 solution was launched, I was excited to bring this new resource to my classroom. I use the curriculum pack in combination C o ntinued o n P age 4 9 C o ntinued o n P age 4 9
