H a r d w a r e & H o u s e w a r e s R e v i e w W e d n e s d a y, M a y 4 , 2 0 1 6 4 HOW MUCH POWER DO YOU NEED? Buying a portable generator is something that many people have thought of doing at one time or another. Whether it's for recreational purposes such as camping, or for safety concerns in the event of a power outage, a portable generator is an easy way to power your dedicated elec- trical appliances and equipment. But before you slap down your credit card and charge what could possibly be sever- al hundred dollars, here are some things you should keep in mind. When you start shopping for a portable generator, be sure to take note of what you're going to be powering. Will the generator be used in your home to power some lights and appliances when a wind storm causes a blackout? Or will you be using it while camping to power your RV? This is an important distinction, because you need to have the right generator to deliver the right amount of power. Kipor makes a variety of generators, from 0.7kW to 6kW that can serve all of your needs. Once you know what you'll be pow- ering, you'll know what size generator you'll need. Then it's simply a matter of consulting any number of charts online that will help you determine how to size a generator for your needs. This is impor- tant because many times people don't fully understand how much power it takes to run even small appliances, like a coffee pot. Some appliances, like refrig- erators and air conditioners, cycle on and off. When this happens, more power is required, so you'll want a generator that can handle that small temporary increase. Inverter generators, like those made by Kipor, can withstand these types of spikes only so much. If they happen continually, this could cause the generator's inverter to fail, ending in a costly repair or replacement. The best course of action is to get more power than what you think you'll need. This will ensure that you have plen- ty of power for your electrical needs and prevent any possible damage to the gen- erator. Visit Kipor in booth #6854.
