BSD: What is the main line of business for DSSP? WS: Defense and space products are our foundation. BSD: Where are you headquartered? WS: We are located in beautiful Reno-Tahoe, Nevada. BSD: How long have you been in business? WS: This year marks our 10th anniversary! BSD: What awards have you won? WS: We've won multiple awards for our aerospace innovations, entertainment prod- ucts and oil and gas research. BSD: To what do you attribute your company's success? WS: Fundamentally, that we reinvented the way energetic materials (propellants) can DSSP CELEBRATES 10 YEARS, INTRODUCES NEW SYSTEM The Phantom Flex4K is Vision Research's digital cinema camera capable of shooting normal sync-sound frame rates all the way to 1,000 frames per second (fps) at 4K resolu- tion. Since its initial launch, the camera has been used primarily for high speed and VFX elements for projects ranging from commer- cials to TV broadcast and feature film produc- tion. Feedback from the community is that the Flex4K image quality is up there with the best, and that the camera is extremely versa- tile – with the ability to capture both 2K and 4K resolutions in addition to both standard and high-speed frame rates. The typical workflow involves raw cine files recorded to the camera's CineMag IV recording media. These raw files are of the highest quality and are compatible with the industry's top color grading systems, but they can also be quite large, as every hour of 4K playback takes up 1TB of space – before the files are rendered. At 1,000 fps, that's less than two minutes of real-time capture. The recent introduction of Apple ProRes 422 HQ provides an alternative high quality recording format to Cine Raw, which requires 2.5x less space for each shot, and ensures compatibility with edit programs immediately after download. With the latest camera firmware, the camera can now record scaled 2K ProRes HQ shots, as well as record with a dual-save mode for 4K Raw, automatically followed by a 4K or 2K scaled ProRes HQ recordings. This is a useful workflow for creating dailies or proxy The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) announced that legendary executive producer/writer Chuck Lorre – the creative force behind the Warner Bros. Television hit broadcast comedies The Big Bang Theory, Mom, Mike & Molly and Two and a Half Men for CBS – is being inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame. As a writer, creator and executive producer, Lorre has been the driving force behind some of the top comedies on television. He is Co-creator/Executive Producer of the blockbuster hit The Big Bang Theory, TV's No. 1 entertainment series among Total Viewers and No. 1 comedy among adults 18-49, as well as the critically acclaimed Mom, starring Anna Faris and Allison Janney, which was honored as a recipient at the Television Academy Honors in 2014. Lorre is also executive producer of Mike & Molly, starring Billy Gardell and Melissa McCarthy, which completes its six-year run this spring, and he was previously Co-cre- ator/Executive Producer of the hit Two and a Half Men, which aired for 12 seasons and was one of TV's longest-running comedies. Before that, Lorre created hits such as Cybill, Dharma & Greg and Grace Under Fire, and he also served as Co-executive Producer on Roseanne. "An artist in the prime of his career, Chuck Lorre is a legendary television writer and producer," said NAB Executive Vice President of Television Marcellus Alexander. "His biting wit and memorable characters have become a part of our culture and defined an era of scripted comedies for Warner Bros. Television and CBS – comedies that remind us, on a weekly basis, of the scale and power of broadcast television." In 2015, Lorre harnessed that power by spearheading the establishment of The Big Bang Theory Scholarship Endowment at UCLA to support undergraduate students in need of financial aid who are pursuing their higher education in the fields of Science, An interview with Alex Babakhanov, Director, Avateq Corp. BSD: Tell our readers about Avateq. AB: Even though today Avateq is involved in manufacturing and support- ing its own line of products, we remain a R&D company at heart. This is where we came from, and I hope, this is where our clients will see us in the future. We spend a lot of time on bringing new ideas to life. Avateq started six years ago by a group of engineers with a strong experi- ence in hardware and software development for the broadcast industry and with a desire to solve complex engineering tasks. This desire led to the development of a very effective echo cancellation engine and a high performance linear and non- linear digital adaptive predistorter. Those engines have been successfully tested and integrated into third-party equipment. Going into manufacturing was our response to the clients' needs. From the very beginning, we participated in industry events such as NAB talking to broadcast engineers, discussing their problems. One of the issues that would come up over and over was lack of affordable but accurate embedded signal analyzers. Available solutions were either cheap probes that were not informative enough or very detailed and very expensive real-time professional analyzers. BSD: You decided to fulfill that niche?
