Signal quality at the transmitter output is one of the vital monitoring points in the content delivery chain. AVQ1020 – ActiveCore[R] RF Layer Monitoring Receiver from Avateq Corp. has been designed to provide broadcast engineers with powerful tools to monitor and ana- lyze transmitted signal. "We designed AVQ1020 to monitor modern digital broadcasting networks, which are often spread over large geo- graphical areas with multiple transmitter and repeater systems installed remotely from the network management centers," explains Vladimir Anishchenko, Avateq's Chief Technology Officer. "It is vital to ensure that the audio and video signals received by the end user – the customer – retain full quality. AVQ1020 is a very practical tool for broadcast engineers to be notified and to be able anytime and from anywhere to access essential RF measurements in order to ensure quality of service." The quality of a broadcast signal is assessed by monitoring a set of parameters, i n c l u d i n g MER, EVM and SNR, standard-specific properties such as modulation modes and signal physical layer structure. The oper- ational health and potential hardware problems of a transmitter station can be viewed by analyzing RF signal critical characteristics: signal bandwidth, group delay, non-linear distortions, spectrum mask, etc. Responding to the clients' requests, Avateq has extended the receiver's capa- bilities by introducing new important DSSP'S ESQUIB A GAME-CHANGER Wayne Sawka founded DSSP in 2005 to bring new chemistry to the defense and space industry. Little did he know that nearly 10 years later, in 2014, DSSP would develop a game-changer in the entertain- ment industry: the eSquib[R]. What makes this company so unique is its background in propulsion systems for satellites. For DSSP, it really is rocket science when it comes to making the nontoxic, smokeless, flame-resistant and reusable eSquib. Using pharmaceutical-grade facilities, Dr. Sawka's team creates some of the highest- quality pyrotechnics on the market. But that's just the beginning. eSquibs are tiny pyrotechnic devices that are con- trolled solely through electricity, making them resistant to heat, impact or flame. Fire marshals love the inherent safety of these devices, not only because flame won't ignite them, but also because the fallout (sparks ejected from the eSquibs) is considered "cold" and won't ignite other materials. At rates of fire less than about 10 times per second, eSquibs will not ignite normal combustible materials such as cot- ton, paper or wood. The only things they have been proven to ignite are black pow- der and flash cotton, making them ideal for intimate proximity and indoor use. Peter Mulvihill, P.E. of Chief Nevada State Fire Marshal Division, stated, "DSSP's eSquib product pro- vides an out- s t a n d i n g p y r o t e c h n i c effect that is safe to use indoors or out, in close proximity to all personnel and spectators. With its ability to produce numerous repeatable effects in both performance and training environ- ments without large amounts of traditional metal-based pyrotechnic materials, it pro- vides a double benefit saving time and pro- moting safety."
