NATURALLY HEALTHY www.gourmetnews.com n MARCH 2016 n GOURMET NEWS N H 3 8 Consumers Trace to Source with Bellucci App Bellucci 100 Percent Italian Extra Virgin Olive Oil has developed new technology, the exclusive Bellucci Traceability App, that keeps track of every drop in every bottle pro- duced by the company. Consumers can trace the contents of every Bellucci bottle back to the source of origin. With each bottle's har- vest date indicated on the front label, Bel- lucci arrives fresh to grocery shelves, with flavor and health-giving antioxidant proper- ties at their peak. Information about origin also revolution- izes the olive oil industry by pinpointing the contribution of mills where locally grown olives were pressed within hours of harvest. Detailed information about location and har- vest provides the opportunity to taste the range of flavors that are correlated with lo- cation and climate. Consumers enjoy the confidence that comes from ease of informa- tion access, truthfulness in la- beling and in knowing the location where a food product originates. The company calls this group of consumers and itself Rooties. A cooperative of growers in rural Italy are the proud major- ity owners of the Bellucci brand. The Italian countryside has benefited dramatically from the efforts of Bellucci growers. The land they cultivate is considered among the most pris- tine and well-preserved agricultural regions in the world. The recognition of individual family groves through the trace- ability program also ensures the distribution of income along the entire value chain. Bellucci en- ables small-scale growers in earning a livelihood while con- tributing to the health of the planet. More information about Bellucci's tradi- tional cultivation practices and EVOO pro- duction is available at www. belluccipremium.com, along with facts about Italian EVOO history and a guide to tasting EVOO. Fruit Bliss' Deliciously Juicy Secret Revealed Fruit Bliss ® ' naturally sun-sweetened USDA Certified Organic, non-GMO verified apri- cots, plums, dates and figs are infused with water to deliver a deliciously juicy fruit every time. Made using high-quality whole fruit sourced from Turkey, France and Tunisia, these fruits are unlike any "dried" fruits on the market. They are uniquely moist and are a convenient, perfect snack. The big, but simple, secret of the delicious juiciness of Fruit Bliss is simply water. The process is simple. First, the fruit is picked at its peak ripeness and then sun-dried for op- timal sweetness. Next the fruit gets a gentle steam bath to infuse some water. Finally, it is packed for on-the-go convenience. Fruit Bliss was founded in 2011 by Susan Leone, a mother on a mission to create a healthy and handy treat for the whole family. As a health-conscious mom, Susan is dedi- cated to creating a wholesome snack with no additional preservatives or sugars that the whole family can enjoy. Yes, even those pickiest of eaters will enjoy these delicious fruits. "When looking for snacks for my family that were both nutritious and convenient, the gro- cery store aisles were turning up short," Leone said. "That is when I knew I had the opportu- nity to offer up something new to other active peo- ple like myself, whether looking for something new and healthy to feed the kids, or just a treat for yourself between work and yoga." For those living a busy, active lifestyle or those who find the healthy snack aisle limit- ing, Fruit Bliss is a welcomed find. Hemp Production Services: 'Quality Starts in the Field' An interview with Kevin Friesen, Vice President of Operations, Hemp Produc- tion Services. GN: Tell us about HPS. KF: HPS is a multi-generational, family farm-owned hemp food agri-business. As farmers, we care deeply about how we grow and produce the food that ends up on your plate. It's our belief that quality starts in the field, and with the seed. Our expe- rienced management and ownership group actively works with our farmers through the entire production cycle, starting with selecting planting seed from our sister company Hemp Genetics International, and then by providing a comprehensive and customized hemp production support system from planting through to hemp harvest. HPS then processes hemp seed into top-quality, yet competitively priced bulk hemp food ingredients. GN: What type of hemp food ingredients do you produce, and who are your cus- tomers? KF: We produce hulled hemp seeds (also known as hemp hearts), cold-pressed hemp seed oil and hemp powders (50 per- cent, 33 percent and 23 percent). Our customers include functional food, cos- metic, hemp food retail brands and nu- traceutical companies that make a variety of nutritional food, snack, pet food and body care products. HPS is not a retail brand; rather, we are a bulk hemp food ingredient supplier. Our core business is to offer our customers a complete supply chain and private label solution for sourcing top quality, competitively priced, organic and conventional bulk hemp food ingredients. We don't com- pete with our customers on the retail shelf. GN: Tell us about your food quality standards. KF: HPS processes hemp grain in its state-of-the art, high-ca- pacity and dedicated hemp-only facili- ties. Our processing facilities adhere to the standards for food quality and safety as per the FFSC 22000, kosher, certified organic and non-GMO protocols. GN: When did you get involved in the hemp industry? KF: In 2001, I started growing hemp on the family farm near Saskatoon, Canada with my father, a farm I still operate, and am now happily teaching my sons "the business." I like to say my sons (ages nine and 11) already have a lifetime of hemp production experience. GN: What sets HPS apart from other hemp food processors? KF: Several factors make HPS the premier hemp food processor. Our ownership/management team is comprised of professional agronomists possessing over 75 years of cumulative ex- pertise in industrial hemp breeding, hemp grain variety develop- ment, hemp production management and bulk hemp food processing. We provide farmers with a comprehensive and cus- tomized hemp production support system for their farm operation. Our vertically in- tegrated hemp production expertise along the entire value chain results in bulk hemp food ingredients of outstanding quality, taste and value. And, finally, our cus- tomers appreciate that HPS never com- petes with the brands we serve; we are a brand supplier, not a retail brand. Our motto says it all, "From our Fields to your Brand!"
