BELGIAN FIRM CONQUERS AMERICAN MARKET WITH WAFFLE MAKERS, CHOCOLATE MACHINES Croquade™ is the international brand of Belgian firm Dalcq S.A. It offers a range of appliances dedicated to Belgian culinary art: waffles, and more recently, chocolate. Active in Belgium since 1958, it is a current leader in waf- fle maker sales. The brand Croquade was established in the U.S. in 2014. Sur La Table was the first retailer to sell its products in the U.S. The national launch took place at the International Housewares Show in Chicago in March 2015, and the Croquade waffle maker has successfully sold to many independent and national accounts since. Quality and Design Dalcq's products are ergonomic, easy-to- use and designed for consumers. Authenticity is another keyword for the company: the new waffle makers are still inspired by the first compact waffle maker with removable plates that was introduced at the Brussels World's Fair in 1958. In order to keep its high standards and Belgian know-how (thanks to more than 50 years of experience), all Croquade products are still manufactured in Belgium. Design also plays a key role. Since Dalcq has started to work with design- ers, it has seen its sales and ambition soar. Design enabled the company, among other things, to put the customer back at the core of its activities and reflect on its position in the long term. Nowadays, the company doesn't launch a new product without integrating design from the very start of the process. In 2013, for instance, Dalcq asked a company specialized in chemical formulation and paint application on any medium to focus on the color of its waffle makers and give them a unique appearance that would be immediately noticeable. The result was a huge success and sales took off. The stock that was planned for the next three months was completely sold only two days after the official launch. "We cannot imagine launching a product without thinking about the design," says Rouyer Gautier, Chief Executive Officer of Dalcq. "Even to change a button, we do not want to do it without design. For us, the design is actu- ally the first step, not the last one. It is what creates the entire product." Spreading Belgium's Culinary Heritage Croquade products are inspired by Belgium's culinary heritage, namely fries and waffles. The name Croquade is actu- ally a mix of the two words "ballade" (Middle-Age song in France) and "cro- quant" ("crunchy" in French) to high- light the nice noisy sensation made when eating crunchy products cooked with these wonderful Belgian fryers. "Today, our products are way ahead of the competition thanks to their relia- bility, durability and user-friendliness," says Sébastien Frédérich, Dalcq's other Chief Executive Officer. "It was logical that, after waffles and fries, we would take a close look to another world famous Belgian delicacy: chocolate. Everyone loves chocolate, so we wanted to make it possible for everyone to create delicious homemade pralines." In 2016, Croquade launches LaChocolatière, its very first domestic chocolate tempering machine with differ- ent accessories to help chocolate lovers create their own chocolates at home.
