C o n s t r u c t i o n M a r k e t p l a c e W e d n e s d a y, J a n u a r y 2 0 , 2 0 1 6 7 2 LJ: Acoustiblok Corporation, a NASA Spinoff listed company, was founded by the President of the company, Lahnie Johnson, more than 20 years ago in Tampa, Florida, and currently supplies noise control products to more than 50 countries worldwide. After working in the aerospace industry during the historic "race for space," Johnson developed a passion for the science of acoustics; inventing solutions to acoustical and environmental noise problems led him to develop the soundproofing material Acoustiblok ® , the company's core prod- uct. Johnson's commitment to research and development have continued to pro- duce cutting-edge noise isolation prod- ucts that are recognized by the building and construction industries all over the world. Acoustiblok has received the top award in the British House of Commons for sound abatement and was recently shown across the globe on National Geographic TV highlighting its unique contributions toward reducing noise pol- lution. Made and sourced in the U.S., the company's innovative products are con- sidered environmentally-friendly. CM: What is involved in the process of reducing noise? LJ: Each situation tends to be unique, and understanding the principles of acoustics and knowledge of the sur- rounding construction or machinery is vital. Acoustiblok is very unique in that it employs acoustical and vibration engi- neering personnel with extensive infield experience who use state-of-the-art diag- nostic and prediction tools and then rec- ommend solutions utilizing the different types of products the company manufac- turers, and if need be, fabricating a cus- tom solution. Truly one of the most revolutionary tools, Acoustiblok is currently pioneering is the Acoustical Real-Time Video Imaging System ® . This system not only allows one to actually see sound for the first time, it also helps in revealing modal transitions of resonance in buildings and structures that a standard spectrum ana- Acoustiblok (Cont'd. from p. 1) lyzer does not reveal. Rather than reading through acoustical data collection, you can now be visually observed and meas- ured with a significantly higher degree of confidence within hours. Seeing is believing. CM: What is Acoustiblok material? LJ: The UL/ULC-Classified Acoustiblok material is truly a unique soundproofing material which has taken years to develop. Just one thin 1/8 inch layer of Acoustiblok in a standard stud wall can reduce more sound than eight inches of poured concrete. The soft flexible material is 4.5 feet wide and is available in 30, 60 or 350 foot rolls, which is usually stapled or screwed to studs before drywall. It is a proprietary formula, barium free, heavy mineral filled, viscoelastic polymer which is easily cut with a utility knife. While other materials attempt to block or absorb sound, Acoustiblok does neither. As the heavy limp Acoustiblok material vibrates from the sound, it actually transforms the acoustical energy into inaudible internal friction energy in a process sometimes referred to as isothermal adiabatic. Lead, previously considered the best soundproofing, works on precisely the same basis and has exactly the same STC rating. CM: What are the company's other pri- mary products? LJ: In addition to Acoustiblok sound- proofing material, the company has numerous other innovative products that are specifically designed to address many types of noise problems: All Weather Sound Panels, Quiet-Cloud, Acoustifence, QuietFiber, Acoustiblok- Wallcover and Thermablok aerogel nanotechnology thermal insulation. The company is currently developing a new product, "Acoustiblok Wall Assemblies," that optimizes wall assemblies for noise reduction. It's hard to believe we will soon be approaching our 20th year. So much about our company has changed over the years and part of that is due to con- stant change in this industry. It's impor- tant to keep up with the technology. We strive to create high performance patent- ed products from the finest materials – that's part of our ongoing dedication to innovation. CM: How are you involved in the build- ing industry? DM: We are members of many industry trade and professional organizations, which allows us to have access to infor- mation to keep up with the trends of the construction industry. National Association of Home Builders, the Insulation Contractors Association of America and Construction Specifications Institute are a few we have been a member of for some time. CM: What are you doing this year that's different from what you did last year? DM: We have quite a few new products that we are excited to promote at the International Builders' Show. We also have a new line of roofing and roof ventilation products. CM: What do you anticipate to be your greatest challenge in the year ahead? DM: I think one of the most important things to do in this industry is to listen to the input from the field. We are always looking for ways to make things easier for the installer. It's important to get feedback from people who are actually using our products so we know if we need to change or improve anything. CM: What makes you different from other companies?
