C o n s u m e r E l e c t r o n i c s D a i l y N e w s E v e n i n g E x t r a 2 1 F r i d a y, J a n u a r y 8 , 2 0 1 6 CEDN: What makes your product spe- cial? HR: First, it is our proprietary sensor technology. Even though we developed it already over 20 years ago, it is the newest on the market for dynamic bal- listocardiogram measurement. Where competition uses over 40 and even 100- year old piezoelectric technologies, our sensor material produces ballistocar- diogram signal with sensitivity and quality, which are the richest details about cardiopulmonary functions. This is why scientists have been excited to do and publish over 200 scientific arti- cles using our sensor technology for various cardiopulmonary functions researches. Because of our visionary sensor technology, Emfit QS is the most com- prehensive sleep monitor on the market in a class by itself, offering a superior amount of data including all three sleep stages (REM, deep, light), heart rate vari- ability measurement throughout the whole night, all-night heart rate and res- piratory rates along with resting heart rate and movement activity. This is why it provides more insight into sleep quali- ty, health and recovery than any other sleep monitor. Secondly, it is our product philoso- phy. We started to manufacture contact free ballistocardiogram sensors 15 years ago. As a true pioneer in this field, our experience from customers is need for a durable but completely discreet Emfit (Cont'd. from p. 1) solution fully autonomic in its opera- tion. This became our mission and our electronics and software platform is developed accordingly. This is why we use Wi-Fi instead of Bluetooth, so there is no need to have a phone for measure- ment. This is why we developed our product to go under the mattress, have sturdy cabling and medical quality power supply. CEDN: What has been the best part of your startup experience? HR: Emfit QS is our internal startup. Fifteen years ago, at ground zero, we started pivoting our company from a sen- sor material manufacturer into an innova- tive and disruptive healthcare technology provider. It surely has taken all our team's energy and resources during all these years. It has been very exciting to work and collaborate with many healthcare professionals, get deep into customers problems, and say, live on the edge. We must thank our first customer groups – elders and people with epilepsy – for our existence. Working for tens of thousands of families and care institutions has been extremely rewarding. Meeting families. Getting all the customer feedback and feeling that we have been needed and there is meaning for what we do. Now we are trying to expand our experience into helping athletes and general consumers. Sleep is after all extremely important to us all. So there's an extra spring in my step this time of year, because CES is inspiration central for what's new and exciting in home technology. For example, I'm thrilled to say that gadgets are no longer relegated to black plastic boxes. Design-friendly, natural colors and textures like wood, linen, wool and bamboo abound. Manufacturers are hearing consumers, who want products to complement, not clash with their décor, and the results are as functional as they are beautiful. Home security products are more affordable and easier to install than ever. Even when you're away from home on travel, wireless window and door sensors, WiFi door locks and cameras can keep an eye on things to make sure your home stays safe – monitored and maintained from your mobile devices. Today, many even have facial recognition, so your home can give you a heads-up if a stranger is lurking. Many of the technologies for the home are focused on the environment, keeping your home healthy and comfort- able. Home control might not be news, but "Home Health" is a new buzz phrase. Sensors can not only monitor and adjust HGTV Smart Home (Cont'd. from p. 1) temperature, but also measure air quality, humidity or CO 2 levels and dust and VOC monitors can help prevent allergy attacks. The kitchen is the heart of the home, and smart home technology is hard at work as your new sous chef – making dinner fast and fun. Innovative cooking methods like induction cooktops and immersion circulators make easy work of gourmet meals, and digital scales make it easy to count calories and bake like a pro. App-operated ovens or pressure cookers will pre-set themselves with a tap of your smartphone, so you can come home to an oven that's ready to get cooking. Another exciting lifestyle trend? Personal assistants throughout the home – think Siri, but sitting on your end table. These gadgets are always listening, so if you want the answer to any question, just ask — about your travel plans, the weath- er, new trends in colors or how many tea- spoons are in a tablespoon. So welcome to Las Vegas and CES 2016, where you'll find smart innova- tions that bring safety, convenience and comfort to your lifestyle and give you a smart home. The key is easy access to the technol- ogy – removing the barriers – and con- necting the family caregiver to the data. We do this in a way that is inclusive, with- out being intrusive on the privacy of the older adult. This is critical to adoption. CEDN: How does it work? DI: The Lively Wearable can be worn with either the wristband or lanyard and pairs with an Android smartphone via Bluetooth. The device tracks the user's steps and features a one-touch button to connect to our 5Star service and its team of highly trained agents in emergency sit- uations. It's always-on, simple user inter- face is waterproof and has up to six months of battery life so it can truly be part of a more active lifestyle. CEDN: Does it work differently when worn on the lanyard? DI: When worn with the lanyard, the Lively Wearable's accelerometer pro- vides automatic fall detection, another safety feature. CEDN: Do you expect users to wear this every day? DI: Yes. We want our users to stay engaged with the device, so we've devel- oped an entertaining app using gaming mechanics that pairs with the device. The user selects from daily physical and men- tal challenges like step goals or brain GreatCall (Cont'd. from p. 1) games. Themed around travel, the Lively app challenges the user to stay active and involved. CEDN: Where does the family caregiver come in to the process? DI: Family caregivers are involved through the Link app. By staying con- nected to the older family member on his or her virtual journey, they can applaud positive events and sent messages of encouragement. As well, the family care- giver is alerted if the user presses the but- ton to call for help. CEDN: Is the Lively Wearable available now? DI: We're currently in pre-sale, with orders being taken for delivery Spring 2016. More information is available at www.greatcall.com/wearable. CEDN: How does the device fit into GreatCall's product portfolio? What else is happening this year? DI: We will be updating all of our prod- ucts – the Splash, Jitterbug5 and Touch smartphone. Our goal is to ensure they fit the needs of our target customer – the older adults and their family caregivers. The introduction of the Lively Wearable is the first step in the development of a connected health portfolio for this rapid- ly growing demographic. TECHSLING PLUS+ ADDED TO TECHSLINGER PRODUCT LINE Nathan Crawford, inventor of the TechSling ® technology holster, is show- casing The TechSling Plus+. Like its flagship TechSling product, The Plus+ is designed for easy accessibility and trans- port, yet this is made with a much larger phone pocket with an elastic strap and an even larger zippered accessory pocket. The tablet pockets are the same design, able to hold tablets and smartphones with either slimline or heavy duty cases. Nathan Crawford states, "The prob- lem is not so much the loss of the device itself but the loss of the proprietary data that's stored on those devices, as well as privacy-protected data that belongs to your clients. Charts and health records are a big issue." About TechSlinger Michigan startup TechSlinger originated in 2012 when inventor Nathan Crawford became annoyed with the constant jug- gling of his iPad, iPhone and accessories, especially during travel. In fact, he designed the first prototype for the TechSlinger holster in his hotel room while traveling. The wearable accessory is engineered for convenient transport of a tablet, phone and accessories. In addi- tion to its flagship product, TechSlinger offers The Side Order, engineered for those who rely on their tablet while on the job, such as waitstaff and plant supervi- sors. All products are made in the U.S.A. For more information, visit www.tech slinger.com.
