The features of future 5G net- works, such as very high speed and capacity with very low latency, are excel- lent for the expansion of the Internet of Things (IoT), with new use cases such as remote machinery control, mobile robot- ic deployment and intelligent transporta- tion systems. Remote Machinery Control – with 5G, heavy machinery can be remotely con- trolled with real-time responsiveness. One advantage of this approach is that a skilled worker could manage multiple projects around the world in the same work day. Mobile Robots – as 5G networks are rolled out, traditional robots will be replaced by new models connected to the cloud. Powered by the speed and capaci- ty of the 5G network, the cloud-enabled robots will act in real time, able to make changes on the fly. These new robots will have access to almost unlimited comput- ing power, making them more flexible, more usable and more profitable to own and operate. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) - 5G networks will create new opportunities for transportation systems. Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) commu- nications will enable fleet management, infotainment, remote car diagnostics and remote management. Other use cases Ericsson North America (Cont'd. from p. 1) involve vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) com- munications, where active safety using sensors in cars and communications between vehicles will help drivers to anticipate, detect and avoid potentially hazardous situations. Finally, vehicle-to- pedestrian (V2P) use cases are being explored, where devices such as LTE smartphones allow a vehicle to detect other people nearby, and respond as nec- essary to avoid accidents. Looking Ahead The ICT industry is now moving into the next phase of the 5G journey. Standardization work has been initiated, and a vibrant ecosystem is forming as both operators and industries start to explore 5G's transformative possibilities through activities such as test-bed coop- eration and use case development. Ericsson's technology leadership puts us at the forefront of 5G research and devel- opment. At the same time, we understand that realizing the full potential of 5G requires cross-industry collaboration. That is why we are focused on driving a global 5G ecosystem that combines Ericsson's unique capabilities with the strengths and insights of customers, industries and academia to drive the opportunities in the Networked Society. Companies you partner with are always making changes. At the U.S. Postal Service, we are constantly looking for new ways to provide more effective solu- tions for our customers: Better online tracking: Through an improved tracking system that offers up to 11 scans, packages can be tracked online or with text alerts – increasing package visibility like never before. My USPS ® : Managing incoming packages has never been so simple. With My USPS, users get automatic, real-time USPS (Cont'd. from p. 4) delivery notifications and can set text or email alert preferences, schedule redeliv- ery and add delivery instructions free of charge. USPS Mobile App: Today's con- sumers are on the go, so a trip to the post office isn't always possible. The USPS mobile app puts a post office in your hand. Use it to schedule free package pickup, scan shipping labels and QR codes, get tracking information, calculate shipping prices or put your mail delivery on hold. Resolving to make changes to boost your business success in the coming year doesn't have to be time consuming or challenging. CEDN: How have ASHA's polling results been shared and what has been the reaction? JC: We released the poll results during Better Hearing & Speech Month (May) to great interest among broadcast, print and digital outlets. Estimating conserva- tively, we put the combined audience reach for that month alone at more than 42 million. We continued to share the polling throughout the year. We ran very successful digital outreach and also suc- ceeded placing op eds in leading papers like USA Today, The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Des Moines Register and The Seattle Times. CEDN: What else happened this past year that you would like to share? JC: Safe listening and hearing protection became worldwide priorities via the Make Listening Safe campaign (www.who.int/pbd/deafness/activities/M LS/en/) of the World Health Organization (WHO), which launched last March. WHO invited ASHA to collaborate on the development and execution of Make American Speech-Language (Cont'd. from p. 1) Listening Safe, recognizing the safe lis- tening leadership ASHA has long provid- ed through its own Listen To Your Buds campaign (www.asha.org/buds). WHO also convened experts from around the world in Geneva this past fall to discuss the importance of safe listening and what could be done to foster it. Those experts included an ASHA representative. CEDN: Why should CES attendees come by your booth? JC: We are able to get the word out about safe listening through support from part- ners like the Consumer Technology Association (CTA). CTA has been with us from the beginning of our Buds cam- paign. While we know that technology can help people with disabilities, clearly there are concerns about the potential negative impact from the misuse of it. The public needs to be aware of those concerns and what they can do about them, especially if young children are the users. Our years of experience exhibiting at CES tell us that many attendees are par- ents. We invite them and anyone else who cares about healthy human communica- tion to come by our booth to learn more. TELEWORK: ACCOMMODATION OPENS NEW DOORS TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES Today's news of telework tends to focus on workers and managers who have choices about exactly where and when they can get to an office. But companies overlook a potentially valuable source of labor – people with disabilities – who can use new technologies to communicate, attend meetings and interact within office settings. While people with disabilities may find their conditions restrict their physical movement, technologies can connect them to professional settings, freeing them to contribute. Technology's Role in Advancing the ADA The Americans with Disabilities Act became law in 1990 to grant people with disabilities "the same opportunities as everyone else to participate in main- stream American life – to enjoy employ- ment opportunities, to purchase goods and services and to participate in State and local government programs and serv- ices." This year marks the ADA's 25th anniversary, an occasion that included an event at The White House in July 2015. Even as the ADA requires employers to make reasonable accommodations for individuals with disabilities to work effec- tively, many people with severe physical limitations cannot enjoy the fulfillment that work provides. What if technology could push those boundaries even further, to open up even more possibilities? Seeing and Hearing Henry as an Equal Henry Evans of Los Altos, California, is a Stanford MBA with experience work- ing at Silicon Valley tech companies until a stroke- like event struck him at 40 years old. Henry is now mute, quadriplegic, and is cared for by his family at home. He often explains that, for an important percentage of the disabled population, leaving home and traveling (even to an ADA compliant building) is often unsafe, inconvenient or impossible. In his TEDx talk, which Henry presented using a Beam Smart Presence System from Suitable Technologies, he describes his elation to feel equal with his friends once again: "The primary reason Beam Smart Presence is so important for dis- abled people is that, if you can speak, no one has to know you are disabled and they don't have a chance to treat you differently (even subconscious- ly). These devices, which show only your head, create for the first time a truly level playing field for people with physical disabilities." Henry hopes the technologies that enable telework, like Beam, gives employers additional tools to maximize the productivity of a per- son with a disability – as well as the incentive to find tasks suitable for those individuals. In Henry's view, this can only encourage employers to proactively target people with disabilities for employment. Beam combines user-controlled mobility with telepresence for team- mates, guests, family and friends who wish to interact from afar. Beam+ is now available for $1,995.
