PROJECT FOUNDRY AND SAVING WILD HORSES Whether dazzling success or dismal failure, there is learning to be had in local, place- based, project-based learning … powerful projects that change kids' lives. The power of the learning comes from "going local," from being place- based, from starting close to home…get- ting that, and then moving out to "get" the bigger world. A great example of this is the "Wild Horses" project at Yakama Nation Tribal School in central Washington state. Students are working to solve a big and complex problem. Wild horses – 15,000 wild horses – are eating the high plateau desert plants to the ground and destroying sacred and medicinal foods in the process. Clearly, the horses love their environment, but over-population is making food scarce, weakening the horses, and destroying the land. Yakama students are partnering with Heritage University researchers to document horse movement and feeding patterns and to design systems to keep the horses away from valued plants. GPS photo plotting, site fencing, data collec- tion and interpretation are leading to understanding of complex science and technology and solutions to save the horses. Solutions that will mean that healthier wild horses and their tribal neighbors will continue to live in harmo- ny as they have for hundreds of years. Like the best of projects, "Wild Horses" is truly a local problem with real local motivation to solve it, resulting in compelling local benefits. It's place- based. Local partners bring their own local focus, knowledge and resources to make the science in this project real-world, authentic, engaging and powerful. BREAKING DOWN LEARNING BARRIERS WITH ZSPACE: STUDENTS EXCEL IN SAN JOSE'S ALUM ROCK UNION ELEMENTARY DISTRICT At Lee Matheson Middle School in East San Jose, Calif., a group of students explore the inside of a volcano via a three- dimensional, holographic image. They can open the volcano to explore inside, learn- ing about its features and how it works. "It feels like it's right in front of you," said one student. Students at Matheson reflect the population of the larger Alum Rock Union Elementary School District, in which about three-quarters of students speak a language other than English at home, and more than 80 percent partici- pate in the district's free- and reduced- lunch program. Matheson students learn in a zSpace STEM lab, which include a set of student virtual reality stations and a teacher sta- tion, each outfitted with an interactive stylus as well as a wide variety of educa- tional software ranging from science and physics to engineering. Virtual-holo- graphic images can be "lifted" from the screen and manipulated with the stylus. With two or three students at each virtual reality desktop, stu- dents collaborate in teams and use critical thinking skills to solve complex chal- lenges. They can perform highly engaging tasks that are often impossible in the real world, like exploring a volcano or exper- imenting with zero gravity. Teacher Victor Guendulien is partic- ularly excited about zSpace, since the stu- dents who learn with the system are those with special needs who have experienced frustration learning in the traditional way. "Working with zSpace in this class- room makes it easier to address each stu- dents' needs," said Guendulien. "They can work at their own pace, in their own language, and understand and explain concepts in their own words." Gisellle Postrado, a resource teacher, can see both the fascination of the stu- dents as well as their growing confidence. "They think, 'wow, I can really do this,'" she said. Perhaps most impor- tantly, Principal Oscar Leon sees zSpace as one way his students can break down barriers. Technology and other STEM programs at his school are opening new doors for Hispanic and Latino students to move towards more study and careers in technology and sci- ence.
