AmericasMart Adds New Collections
If you're on the West Coast, mark your cal-
endars now for the inaugural SF Cheese
Fest on September 19 at Dogpatch
WineWorks. Dogpatch is a neighborhood
in the heart of America's favorite food city
that is a hub for craft producers of food,
beer, and wine. "Our goal is to bring rural
cheesemakers into the city to be celebrated
in the city," said Anthea Stolz, Executive
Director of the California Artisan Cheese
Guild, the host of the event.
"The mission of SF Cheese Fest is to cel-
ebrate the hard work, craftsmanship, and
unique character of California cheese and
cheesemakers. In this moment of drought
and hardship, in a time of rising feed costs
and increased FDA regulations, the artisan
cheesemaker gets squeezed like no other,
lost in the middle. We want to change this
by putting them in center stage, at least for
a night."
The event will bring cheesemakers to-
gether with urban San Francisco cheese
lovers who don't necessarily make it out to
the farms to see where their cheese comes
from but who will be interested to learn
about the people and craft behind the prod-
ucts. "Our hope is to connect with urban
consumers who are interested in cheese but
may not know how many amazing produc-
ers exist within two hours of the city," Stolz
said.
She pointed out that cheesemakers are
typically very busy with milking, farming
and cheesemaking chores, which doesn't
necessarily leave them with a lot of time to
market their cheeses in the city. SF Cheese
Fes will bring them together with cheese-
mongers, goat wranglers, cow tippers,
sheep breeders and more for a festive
evening of cheese tasting and locally
crafted beverages.
Tickets will be available online, starting
in July.
