GOURMET NEWS JULY 2015 www.gourmetnews.com FROM THE PUBLISHER 4 Greetings! As we go to press with the July issues of Gourmet News and Kitchenware News, we're preparing to go to New York and the Summer Fancy Food Show. By the time you'll read this, you're likely to have just returned from the show, so this is a good time to hazard some spec- ulations about what we're expecting to see there, while you will have a Monday morn- ing quarterback's perspective. We have seen the stunning list of sofi Fi- nalists, so it takes no great perspicacity to know that the Fancy Food Show will once again reflect an outstanding outpouring of creativity and craftsmanship, and we'll be offered a world of opportunities to taste gloriously flavorful food that's nourishing to both body and soul. We notice three mini-trends among the sofi Finalists that we'll be looking to see if we notice again around the show floor: beets, pickles and cured meats. We're seeing a lot of interest in pickles and charcuterie in the culinary world, so there's no surprise there, but the interest in beets is a little harder to figure, and it'll be interesting to see how the pos- sibilities for the humble root vegetable have been reimagined. We saw intense interest in blue cheeses during the National Restaurant Associa- tion's show this year, and we're expecting to see that again at the Summer Fancy Food Show. Point Reyes Farmstead has two blue cheeses among the sofi Final- ists, but they won't be alone in the ex- hibit hall. Point Reyes' Original Blue won the award for Best Cheese/Dairy Product at the 2011 Fancy Food Show, and in this category this year, it's competing with cultured butter from Vermont Creamery, Bellwether Farms Creme Fraiche, Origi- nal Rainbow Trout Caviar from Sunburst Trout Farms and Olio Verde from Mani- caretti Italian Food Imports. Quite a cat- egory! Best wishes to all for success at the Summer Fancy Food Show and all the other upcoming summer markets, from AmericasMart in the East to the Las Vegas Market that's closer to our home in Tuc- son, Arizona. What better way to enjoy the summer than with food, fun and friendship?. GN — Lee M. Oser Publisher WWW.GOURMETNEWS.COM PUBLISHER Lee M.
