P r o d u c e S h o w D a i l y W e d n e s d a y, J u n e 1 0 , 2 0 1 5 4 A UNIQUELY DIFFERENT KIND OF POTATO SUPPLIER By Dave Yeager, Vice President, Farm Fresh Direct Farm Fresh Direct is a uniquely different potato supplier because we're owned by growers, many of which are second and third generation family farms. The investments we have made in our farms are directly tied to helping you make your potato category as successful as it can be. Since 1999, the year Farm Fresh Direct was formed, we've made invest- ments in our ground, equipment, technol- ogy, sustainability and our food safety. All of those investments were made to help ensure we provide you with the safest, highest quality potato products that meet, or exceed, your customers' expectations. Thanks to you, those investments have paid off. Today, Farm Fresh is recognized as a leading grower/supplier of organic pota- toes, new varieties, specialty potatoes, fresh convenience potatoes, along with conventional russets, reds and golds. What has really fueled our growth is innovation. Farm Fresh was the first to market the indi- vidually wrapped microwave pota- to, PotatOH™, a line that has been expanded to include sweet potatoes and microwav- able and oven safe, creamer sized tray packs. We've also taken a very aggres- sive approach to new varieties, most of which are proprietary to Farm Fresh, that offer unique consumer benefits. As the trend for organics continues to grow, Farm Fresh has more than quadrupled our organic acreage over the past five years to ensure supply and meet growing consumer demand. However, many managers and safety directors are frustrated with their apparent inability to achieve 100 percent compliance to safety and ergonomics initiatives. The Three Second Rule just may be the solution. With over 14 years of experience as the previous Director of Workplace Safety at Hannaford Supermarkets and Delhaize America, Brian Doe, currently Principal Hygienist at EHS Advantage LLC, adheres to the following guiding principle for ergonomic design: "three seconds or less, without struggle." Doe's field experience with the application of ergonomic solutions in retail has yielded this conclusion: Even if a process or tool makes a task safer, employees won't implement it at the expense of efficiency. "This was particu- larly the case," he says, "in high-volume locations where employees feel pressure to do whatever it takes to get the job done." This doesn't imply workers don't care about safety. On the contrary, after months of research and straightfor- ward conversations, Doe came to this conclusion: "At the expense of their own body, these employ- ees were loyal to serving the customers." One hundred percent compliance is only possible when employees under- stand why a tool or procedure is neces- sary and when it doesn't interfere with productivity. Doe's conclusion was cemented when he discovered, in a busy retail environment, mere seconds could mean the difference between employees Continued on Page 29 Continued on Page 29 AN INDEPENDENT PUBLICATION NOT AFFILIATED WITH UF Lee M.
