R e s t a u r a n t D a i l y N e w s S a t u r d a y, M a y 1 6 , 2 0 1 5 4 2 ANCIENT GRAINS SEA SALT CHIPS AWARDED FOR CLEANEST PACKAGED FOOD For the second consecutive year, Boulder Canyon Authentic Foods has been named a recipient of Prevention magazine's Cleanest Packaged Food Awards. This year, the brand's Ancient Grains Sea Salt snack chips received praise for its use of seven old-school grains, nutty flavor and boost of fiber. The annual awards feature the best, healthiest, and cleanest boxed and bagged foods, with winning products meeting strict criteria, including that the product must not contain GMO ingredi- ents, may contain no more than 10 grams of added sugar and must have less than 200 mg of sodium per serving (or 400 mg for meals). Award winners must also be delicious. "The Boulder Canyon brand was founded on the notion that clean-eating and real food ingredients do, in fact, taste better than processed foods," said Steve Sklar, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Inventure Foods, Inc., which owns the Boulder Canyon Authentic Foods brand. "To be part of Prevention's distinguished Cleanest Packaged Foods Awards for the second straight year provides proof of that con- cept and we're thrilled by the honor." Ancient Grains blends together quinoa, millet, chia, amaranth, brown rice, brown teff and sorghum to create a crack- er-like chip that is thin, yet hearty. The chips are lightly seasoned with just a touch of sea salt so they are naturally low in sodi- um. In addition, they are cooked in better- for-you sunflower and safflower oils that are low in saturated fats and high in monounsaturated fats. The suggested retail price is $3.49 – $3.99 per 5.5-ounce bag. Boulder Canyon's Ancient Grains are a source of 10 whole grains and fea- ture zero trans fats, no cholesterol and just one gram of saturated fat. In addi- tion, each serving provides two grams of fiber and protein as well as boosts of cal- cium and iron. The chips are certified gluten-free, kosher certified and contain no genetically modified organisms. THREE AMERICAN CHEESEMAKERS WIN TROPHIES AT 2014 WORLD CHEESE AWARDS Bath Blue, a classic blue-veined cheese made by UK-based Bath Soft Cheese Co. took home the highest honor at this year's World Cheese Awards, being named World Champion Cheese 2014. The cheese was chosen for the honor from a larger pool of 62 Super Gold medal-winning cheeses. Judges at this year's World Cheese Awards, held in conjunction with the BBC Good Food Show in London, tasted 2,600 entries in front of a live consumer audience. The event brought together 250 experts from around the world who worked in teams of four to determine which products were worthy of medals. Each team awarded gold, silver, bronze or no award to each cheese based on its own individual merits. At the end of the initial judging, each team selected a favorite cheese, awarding that cheese a Super Gold medal. The 62 Super Gold winners were then judged again by another jury and whittled down to just 16 trophy-win- ning cheeses. A final panel then decided the World Champion in front of a packed consumer and trade audience. Several American-made cheesemak- ers won trophies at this year's World Cheese Awards, including Vermont's Cellars at Jasper Hill, whose Bayley Hazen Blue was honored as World's Best Unpasteurized Cheese. Bayley Hazen Blue won a Super Gold award, and sub- sequently made it into the final round of 16 cheeses, where it was officially recog- nized as a trophy winner. Cellars at Jasper Hill also took home gold awards for the company's Cabot Clothbound and Moses Sleeper, silver awards for its Harbison and Oma and bronze awards for Weybridge and Kinsman Ridge. Wisconsin-based Sartori received top honors at the awards, earning 14 medals in total, including three gold medals and a Super Gold. The cheese- maker's Sartori Reserve Kentucky Bourbon BellaVitano earned the cheese- maker its highest honor, receiving a tro- phy as Best Overseas Additive Cheese. "We're very humbled to have Sartori cheese place in the top-16 in each of the past four years. We're competing against the best from all across the world," said Sartori President, Jeff Schwager. "Last year, we received two Super Gold medals, and in 2011 our Cognac BellaVitano was honored as the third best cheese in the world, the highest finish ever for a U.S. cheese. For Sartori, it's about consistency and quality and having the dedication each day to make the best cheese in the world." In addition to Sartori Reserve Kentucky Bourbon BellaVitano, the cheesemaker received gold medals for its Chai BellaVitano and Espresso BellaVitano. Ten additional medals were awarded to Sartori, including silver for Extra-Aged Goat, Merlot, Balsamic, Black Pepper and BellaVitano Gold and bronze for Rosemary Asiago, Cognac BellaVitano, and Pastorale Blend®. A third American cheesemaker also won a trophy at this year's World Cheese Awards: California's Fiscalini Cheese Company. The company's Bandage Wrapped Cheddar was honored as Best Mature Traditional Cheddar Cheese. Fiscalini Bandage Wrapped Cheddar is renowned for its firm, crumbly texture and smoky, lingering aftertaste.
