Pioneered by Delos Living, and in part- nership with the WELL Building Institute, this standard identifies specific conditions, that when holistically inte- grated into building architecture and design, enhance health and well being. JCJ Architecture was honored to be selected as one of few, respected firms to send representatives to the first International WELL Building Institute WELL AP Workshop. Hosted by the Cleveland Clinic, this seminar prepares attendees to become the first class of WELL Accredited Professionals. As guest awareness increases, so do expectations for spaces that promote human health and well-being. Design principles and technology are transform- ing public spaces, hotels, spas and other indoor environments by placing health and wellness at the center of design and construction decisions. With people spending over 90 percent of their time indoors, the built environment has a profound impact on our health, happi- ness, productivity and well-being. The tribe's journey into winemaking began in 2010, when the tribe purchased nearly 1,400 acres of land known as Camp 4 from the late actor-turned-vint- ner Fess Parker. The land came with 256 acres of vines – the Camp 4 Vineyard – planted with 19 different grape varieties. In addition to honoring existing contracts for the fruit, the tribe embarked on its own winemaking ven- ture. In 2013, the tribe launched its wine under the label "Kitá," which means "our valley oak" in the tribe's native language of Samala. Not only does the Santa Ynez Chumash tribe have a Native American winemaker, it has one of its own mem- bers as Kitá's winemaker: Tara Gomez. The daugh- ter of a long- time tribal gov- ernment offi- cial, Richard Gomez, Tara was a young girl when she first visited vineyards with her parents. By the time she was in high school, she knew she wanted to be involved in winemaking. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in enology from California State University, Fresno and after college worked in the wine industry at two local wineries. In the short time since Kitá has been Continued on Page 23 Continued on Page 23
